This winter I changed all my water lines, changed my faucets and installed a pressure sensing pump in our in Catalina 250 and it all worked really well. I thought I spent my upgrade money for the 2015 season. Well after my boat was launched in late May, as my wife and I brought it out of the marina the engine, 1998 Mercury 9.9 4 Stroke was running rough. As we headed to the open water the engine was slipping in gear, we nursed it back to our dock and came to grips with purchasing a new engine for our 2003 Catalina 250 with a wheel. We have an excellent dealer close by who sells Mercury marine products. We purchased a Mercury 9.9 Big Foot with Electric start and remote controls. I have dreamed of binnacle mounted engine controls, so I went for it (Edson Engine Controls). My wife and I mounted the engine controls, with help its not so bad. The engine will be installed next week.

So the new engine (2015 Mercury 9.9 Pro Kicker 4 blade prop, high thrust, power tilt) is nice, much smaller than my 1998 4 Stoke. It allows much more room in back area where room is needed. The engine is very quiet at low speeds. There is some vibration at about 1/8 throttle, but its resolved adjusting up or down slightly. The stopping power is good by quickly popping into reverse.
The Edson binnacle mount control are wonderful, so much more control and confidence, no more fumbling in the marine, it is the best upgrade on the boat by far.

For my first year I wanted binnacle mounted controls, but eventually I learned to sit astride the wheel on starboard side when docking, and just reach back with my left hand to control throttle/shift. After I mastered that trick, the Edson controls fell to the bottom of my list.
However, my motor is mounted directly on the transom, not on a bracket. This makes the controls easier to reach.
