Again, my wife and I will be attending the Newport show on next Friday evening (9/18) and Saturday morning. We look forward to this show all year. Hopefully I'll be stopping off at Defender to check the sales. If any New England-ers plan on attending it would be nice to meet up.

Let's hope the fates are in your favor! I had to give my mgr about 4 weeks' heads up but so far I'm still clean & green for Friday and Saturday. We're staying up near Warwick since reasonably-priced hotel rooms were sold out in Newport and Middletown. Someone suggested why not rent a cottage in Jamestown for the weekend but none of the owners or rental agencies would rent for two nights. Maybe next year I'll look into doing the week up there.
And darn it! They're sold out at the Castle Hill Resort.

Newport was so Yar!!! The boat show was so awesome! Cathy and I enjoyed clam chowder, surf and turf and some authentic Narragansett beer. She also enjoyed the Pinot Grigio. Friday afternoon we had the place to ourselves. We spent time with the vendors. Fender adjusters, fuel additives, personalized hats and tee shirts, aftermarket bow thrusters and beautiful marinas in way-the-heck Maine. We scored tchotchkes galore!

Saturday-on the other hand - was a zoo! It was like they let folks out of their cages. We had a nice time visiting the Catalina 315, the Benetaus, the Jenneaus, the Bavarias and the Alerions. Loved the latter. Then we saw the Seaward 32. Love at 1st sight.

They were offering the boat show special: $240,000 with a $20,000 discount. If you don't need the trailer take off $10k. So for a fully outfitted boat with Bimini, dodger, furlers, full galley, Yanmar 4 cylinder and a retractable keel, $210,000.
I'd guess if we put down $20k, our payments would have been about $500/mo forever!

Saturday the place was packed. Weather cooperated a lot. Later we went out to Jamestown for dinner. That's a place we might want to get seriou about in a few years.

Stuff happens and I did not get their, and looking at my work schedule doubt I could pull off Annapolis in a week or so either. Interesting you like the Seaward so much -- I have wondered how it would fare in a chop vs the swells of florida's gulf from where it hails. I love the Bavaria 33, at @$150k, but not as much as having cash in my bank account. If like the 309, expect the Catalina 315 is in the @$125k range. Have heard that all the newest Catalina's need to be reefed very early. The most important thing is that we can all dream about what we might buy "if" we hit the lottery . . . . .

Peter: Friends upgraded from their C-30 to the open transom version of the C-34, which they bought used. What a nice boat and great value! Keep your eyes open--it doesn't necessarily take six figures to get into a very nice, "well-found" vessel!

Dave -- Hear ya! While we all dream of new, my reality is tried and true used. On that list is the C-30 and C-34 as well as various models from Sabre and Ericson. All that said, I'm not in a rush.

My wife and I saw a Catalina 309 about 4 years ago at the Newport show. Loved it - that was THE boat we wanted.
Last winter I talked to a broker at the New England show.
He said they're a popular model but they come up from time to time. I could put in a "standing order" with that guy or I could scour the Craigslist each week till I find one.
I agree - a well found used boat is a better deal than an unequipped new one.

Bruce, FYI Coneys on Long Island had a 309 not sure it's status and Willis also on LI has a couple 310's I too like the 310/309 but they supposedly Need to be reefed early. Also check out the 320

Boat show is great. Once I went on a C&C on display at the show though and the salesman on board said that I shouldn't even bother looking at the vessel if I didn't have the cash to buy it. I haven't been back since.

Ya, it's "interesting" to see the displays with reception areas where you are interviewed and then (maybe) registered before you're allowed to board their yachts. Makes you feel "special." But I haven't had that treatment from C&C. If I did, I'd get the salesman's name, write it down in front of him, and bid him a nice day. He can then wonder what happens next...

Its nice to dream of a larger boat, Let's face it the C25 isn't exactly roomy but is more than adequate for a day sailor. I'm amazed at the people who take them on trips for more than a day. Sure going larger crosses every sailors mind with all the dreams that come with it myself included but what usually brings me back to my senses is what I always tell Sara. I can easily afford the price of the bigger boat. That's a one shot bill but what I can't afforded or am not willing to spend is the constantly repeating costs that go with a larger boat. It is nice to dream of sailing off over the horizon with the sun setting in the distance, That costs nothing.

I probably would have said, you must have something else lined up, because you won't last long in this business............

I've been to the Miami show a few times and all of the west FL shows for well over 15 years. Some of the brokers even remember me from the previous show.

Of course we did not board those motor yachts, but we did board every sailboat at that show, including that Gunboat and that Privilege 61'. The only one we did not, was a Lagoon 56, there was a line and they did want you to sign in.

Our next boat will probably be a C320. I could spend my money on one now, but our ability to go out for a week at a time has been restricted by lack of time, not lack of space. If I bought now, I feel like I'd be saying "Why did I do that?" for a couple of years.

The C250 is such an easy and fun boat to sail, so little maintenance, and such nice open space down below and in the cockpit. I really don't want to subject myself to the maintenance headaches/costs of a larger boat until I can get an proportional increase in functionality with it.

Well said! I've known more than a few people who found that the big boat they always thought they wanted turned out to be too big to enjoy merely sailing on. It became a floating dockside condo.

If my funds and personal circumstances came together to support it, my choice would be a 20-something sailboat to enjoy sailing on, and a 36-42' powerboat to go places and entertain on (both with a "crew" of one). However, reality brings me to my current compromise, which ain't bad! (...as long as I get to sail on other people's boats!)

I had use of a friend's Mason 44 all summer, and that confirmed what I suspected. Smaller is more fun unless you really need the space. 44' is way more than we would need for the two of us, and 32' is the sweet spot for us when we're ready.

My wife isn't crazy about the Mason 44, but after talking to her it's not just the size. The full keel with little skeg rudder makes it very reluctant to turn, and no matter how hard we tried to bring her about quickly, we got caught in irons a few times because she was so slow. It's a boat that's designed to cross oceans, so you set a tack and leave it there for a day or two. The Cheasapeake Bay isn't really big enough for a boat like that, and the 6.5' draft is also very limiting.

My experience with moving up is somewhat different. The Gemini is actually easier to sail than my C25. You don't get to feel the effects of tweaking the sails as much, you do get to see the difference as the SOG increases.

One thing I've noticed though, most of the large sailboats in my marina rarely, if ever, leave the dock. Because of the Gemini's beam, we are situated with the larger mono-hulls. At least two of them have not moved in a year and half we've been there. And most of the others we've only seen gone from their slip's once or twice in that time.

When I was a kid, and bought my first boat (13 FT Old Town center deck outboard) my retired neighbor who was an avid sailor and owned many "yachts" -- then a Concordia, came racing over to give me advise, At one point he pulled out a picture of his "favorite" sailboat which was a 19 ft daysailer. He looked at the picture and said "wish I had kept her, I could handle her by myself at any age . . . ." Well, I look at larger, and may make the leap, but in my heart I wish I still owned my old, Alberg designed Corinthian. A sweet sailer, easy to single hand, and while the Admiral and son/Second Mate wants larger, they also go out far less often than I do, so . . . . C30 vs C34 vs C320 vs CD Typhoon vs Ensign vs . . . . . saving money and just keeping what I have!!

She is a pretty girl.

Love that Typhoon--Alberg's cutest girl! 18-1/2', sleeps 4! (...sort of ) But 4 is almost too many in the cockpit under sail.

As for the Seagull, it's appropriately classic--that's about all.
