Reading various threads over the years it appears that A. many of us would love to meet each other, and B. doing so with boats (read regattas, etc) is complicated and costly. So . . . . might it not make sense to arrange for regional get togethers during and off season so folks can meet, chat, and exchange ideas/stories? The obvious options include boat shows, but looking toward 2016 season maybe we should think about some venues that make regional sense and plan/schedule.
Any thoughts??

Winter is a great time! (...except maybe in the "no-winter" states.) Years back, the association informally organized what sounded like a very successful get-together in Dayton, Ohio, where some folks (including couples) stayed in hotels. There was one event at a restaurant. I'd suggest more regional get-togethers where travel and accommodations are (respectively) limited and optional. But history suggests a "big one" could be put together again with limited effort.
Mystic, CT has many restaurants and hotels that are in off-peak mode through the winter months, and I suspect would love some business, with adequate notice. Small, medium and very large rooms are available for group dinner activities. The Mystic Seaport will be open only Thursday through Sunday from Jan. 1 through March 25. Driving from NYC is about 2 hours, Boston a little less, RI much less; Long Island by ferry from Orient Point puts you in New London, a 10 minute drive.
For any wider audience, TF Green Airport in Providence (PVD) is about 45 minutes away (with no public transport). Amtrak comes to New London and (fewer trains) to Mystic.
There it is...

I have been able to visit Mystic about three times over the past ten or so years and will go again. I think it is a fantastic place to visit. Being from a warm climate, I probably would not attempt a winter visit. I have a rule "Never go north of the Red River between November and March" . However, for those of you that are comfortable in the cold I highly recommend a visit.

Life is not a dress rehearsal. You will not get another chance.
I think it is a great idea to promote get togethers....One way that some could make arrangements is thru the "Port Captains" posting. I do not believe that posting which is always listed near the top of one of our main bulletin boards (either the General postings or the Cat 25 postings) has been that active but it is available to be contacted when in the area. I know that I am listed somewhere down in that posting eons ago and...thru the years, 1 or 2 have contacted me via those postings but things just did not work out based on their schedules in northern va/ DC area..
Anyway, during past years, John P and I have gotten to sail together 2-3 times. He came down to sail on the upper Potomac R and I went up to sail with him on the Magothy R & Chesapeake Bay.
I have also gotten together at least twice with Dave in Mystic Seaport. One time, my spouse and I were enroute to visit with a friend in Plymouth, Mass and we stopped to visit with Dave enroute. He gave us a terrific boat tour of Mystic by water ! I have also been on 1 or 2 business trips that brought me close to the Mystic area and so we were able to have dinner together.
I think it is great to renew this type posting. Everyone should consider getting together as time allows and if known that you will be in the area of a fellow member. You never know, it may be an opportunity for a sail outing !
