In case you didn't notice, it's Black November now. As for Friday, I wouldn't even get into the car. Humbug!

I went to the local West Marine store and while not a Black Friday sale, I bought an inexpensive PFD Type III vest to replace one of mine that was old and ratty looking. It sold for about $22 but I used my $10 points coupon to get it for $12.
I also needed to replace the Hammer Hydrostatic Gage/CO2 Assy on my Mustang Auto-Inflatable PFD since the existing Assy expires end of Dec but West Marine wants $80+ for a new one. Defender had it on sale for $55, so I ordered it online.
Not exactly Black Friday, but for my center console outboard a Garmin GPS/Chart Plotter with a list of $799 for $599 before $100 rebate. Have some other items in the crosshairs pending deals this weekend.

Black Friday was spent at home with family, daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter, who turned 4 just before Thanksgiving. Saturday we ventured to the mall to find Santa and get a new winter coat for the little one before they venture to Michigan to the in-laws for Christmas. I'm eyeing a new flat screen TV for the bedroom, but that may have to wait until the after Christmas sales.

David, sounds like you had a really nice family day. I'm positive they'll save you a flat screen TV for the post holiday sales. I like many of you decided to take advantage of a quiet day. And I reaped great rewards. Here in CT the weather was downright balmy! Sunny, not windy and mild in the 60°s! Not bad for late November. My brother-in-law helped me put up my winter cover on Passage and then we celebrated with brandy and cigars down at the boatyard "clubhouse-on-the-hard". I did buy my wife some blouses on my smartphone before the onslaught on Friday. Got the color, size and style she wanted.

Savage FXP 22LR, Crickett 22LR, and 500rds of Windchester for the kids Christmas gifts. Then a double rifle case for myself. Didn't have to fight people for them either.

OK -- so I found for my new power boat (sorry all) Garman GPS/chart-plotter for $200 off and Jenson stereo for similar. C-25 stuff -- less enticing. ut still cruising the net to see what, if anything, maybe available!!!

I just wish that we could get past Thanksgiving before they start with the Christmas decorations and stuff.

On 11/28 I indicated I bought a PFD Vest to replace an old ratty one I had and I also purchased a replacement Hammer Hydrostatic Gage/CO2 Assembly for my inflatable vest.
But you know, probably similar to some others out there, I never seem to stop buying...every week seems to be a potential gift buying time. So, sometimes when I am asked what I want for the Holidays, I usually indicate not really anything since I am buying things all the time !
Knowing that I am going to replace my hydrostatic gage/CO2 assembly probably this weekend, when I went out sailing yesterday (nice sunny day with temps in mid-40s), I took a look at the flares I had onboard since I figured they too needed replacement - Turns out the expiration date was sometime in 2013 !! Okay...and then I figured the Ronstan half finger length gloves that I use all the time was pretty much worn out - They need replacement as well.
I checked a number of online merchants, Amazon, Defender, etc but all were charging for shipping. I wound up buying the gloves thru West marine Online. They did not have them in the store but had them online and there was no shipping cost sent to the home probably due to the Holiday buying frenzy. In regards to the flares - Those have expiration dates every 3 years and I recall Sailing Magazine having an article on a new electronic signal light that met the USCG regs as a substitute for the flares (and then use the orange alert flag for daytime). Searching the web, I came up with the signal light - It is a Sirius S-O-S Signal LED Light and I found several articles on the web regarding it as a USCG approved substitute for flares and now recommended to get away from carrying and then having to dispose of pyrotechnics every 3 years. Believe it runs on 3 "C" batteries which are recommended to replace annually. The 2 negatives are the cost ($99 by just about all merchants) and you have to remember to replace the batteries every year. The positives are (and you hope that you never have to use it) is that it is safer than storing and then using pyrotechnics; it has no expiration, recognized and states on it that it is USCG approved, It floats and it can also be attached to one of your stays or another high point on the boat. But paying out $99 versus ~$30 every 3 years is a hard sell for many that may only keep their boat for 5-6 years or so. Anyway, I went for it, purchasing it from Overtons that was selling it online with free shipping.
This has nothing to do with Black Friday, but does have to do with buying replacement CO2 cartridges for inflatable PFDs.
Summer of 2009, I found myself between jobs and took advantage of severance pay and went sailing for three months. I bought a harness/inflatable PFD and headed off to St. Martin to join my first boat for a passage from St. Martin to Bermuda to Newport, RI. When flying to St. Martin, the airline took my CO2 cartridge from my Sterns Harness/Inflatable PFD and left a friendly note in my luggage.
The CO2 cylinder has a special end on it that is specific to the Stearns PFD. I hunted all over St. Martin and could not find a replacement cartridge. The owner of the boat had several PFDs/with harness so I just used one of his for the passage. Once in Bermuda, I shopped again with no luck.
I did check out the local WM in Newport and found what I needed, but since I was getting right back on an airplane and flying to Tortola for another passage, I elected to not waste my money and give another cartridge to the airline.
Once in Tortola, I shopped again with no luck. The next stop was St. Thomas. Again no luck. So, I called Stearns. They replied, "Sorry for the inconvenience. We will overnight one to you." Then almost as quickly, said. "So, sorry, we can not put the cartridge on an airplane."
I sailed across the Atlantic with no CO2 cartridge in my harness/PFD. While in the Azores, I shopped again. Nothing available. I sailed on to Scotland. Nothing available in Scotland (numerous places throughout Scotland). I also shopped in London before my flight home. Nothing available there either.
Once I arrived home, the local West Marine heard my complaint and gave me money back, allowed me to keep it and gave me a replacement cartridge.
David - Wow ! That's an interesting story and alert to anyone contemplating bringing an inflatable PFD.
I guess you could always manually inflate it with the tube they all seem to have but obviously, the PFD without the CO2 assembly intact and charged will not pass a an inspection but more importantly would not offer the protection it is designed to provide.
So this morning many will find new shiny things under the tree and in your stocking. Hope Santa brought you what you wanted. Got the Admiral an iPad mini 4 in gold with a silicone case. First app I want her to download is a chartplotter so she can track our voyages.

I got a Samsung Tab e tablet. Let it charge up yesterday. Will play with it today.
David, I have had an older model Samsung Tab 2 for awhile, and just recently learned about an app called Samsung Link [http://samsung-link.en.lo4d.com/] that you might be interested in. It allows you to link your computers, your cellphone, your tablet, your smart tv and even your digital cameras, so that you can share files among all of them. If you have photos or video or music or other files on your laptop computer, for example, you can open them on your cellphone, or your other devices. I just learned about it a few days ago, but it's really neat!
Edit: Aha! I get it. Samsung Link is just Samsung's version of Dropbox. Dropbox seems to work well, so I'll probably uninstall Samsung Link.
