Motor won't tilt back down

9.9 Mercury is stuck in the up tilted position. Has never given me a problem tilting up out of the water or down before. Yes, it's in forward. Any ideas?

I assume you mean the gear selector is in forward? I know that neither of my Tohatsu motors will tilt up if the selector is in gear. Is it possible the same is true to tilt down? Never tried to engage the transmission when it's tilted up, but I suppose anything is possible.

I had a similar motor and there is a spring loaded lever in the transom area that has to spring out when you lift the motor all the way. Sometimes they get sticky with corrosion and won't pop out into the other groove path. Don't smash your hand, but you should be able to manipulate it. If that was the problem use some spray lube and work it by had for a while.

Same thing here with the Honda 8 on Passage. The spring-loaded pawl that holds the motor in the up position got sticky. I used some WD-40 to clean out the old grease, wiped it with a rag, then re-applied some axle-grease to the mechanism. Works fine now. Not sure how the Merc is configured, but on the Honda the mechanism was underneath the head unit, directly behind the plate that is flush with the motor mount. Best to relube your entire engine's movable parts once every two years as preventative maintenance.

My Honda 9.9 had problems not staying up, so I used WD40 to lubricate the pawl, but that only worked for a while until the spring broke and was replaced in the Honda outboard/motorcycle shop.
