Hello to all

It's been a tough winter here on Long Island, but started working on the boat this past weekend. Fisrt order is to re-bed all my handrails, stanchions, and genoa track.

I removed the teak in the cabin exposing the nuts to the genoa track now have to devise a way to work the hardware free from the deck. Has anyone used a stiff spatula for this? Is there a better way, I dont want to damage the topsides.

Appreciate all replies, and by the way santa got me a digital camera so i will post some of the upgrades i did last year.

Ah yes, the joys of re-bedding.

CB's advice.

I have found a plastic-faced mallet is often useful for working loose bedded hardware. Often some solid raps from different directions will help break things free. Patinence is a virture in this area.

If you're using a screwdriver, putty knife or other prying implement, putting some masking tape down around the work area can help protect the deck from scratches.

If the bedding was done with a strong adhesive/sealant like 5200, careful use of a heat gun can also help. At a specific temperature 5200 releases and turns back to goo. I've also seen chemical 'release agents' for 5200 advertised in the West Marine catalog, but I haven't used any.

I use a guitar string - really cheap at Walmart or whatever - as a wire saw. Slides right under once the fasteners are out and cuts the fitting free from the deck without damage to either.
