New 4 spring mount problem/solution

Hi all,
As I posted a little earlier, I got the new 4 spring mount from CD. Unfortunately (against everything I read and was told) the holes don't line up. Top to bottom they are fine, but the width is off! They will be about 1/2 diameter off.
I'm not a fiberglass tech, so here's what i'd like to do.
Fill the holes with Marine Tex. Get two new backing boards. The PO used what I think are cut down poly cutting boards.
Drill new holes from a template then install both backing boards with 5200.
Then bolt the new mount on.
Does that sound OK?

I made a couple suggestions in your other thread.

In response to your idea here, why not use the two holes that fit, and only drill new holes for the other side?

If possible, use the 2 holes closest to the rudder. Otherwise you may end up too close to it. Fill the 2 outer holes and prepare to drill 2 new outer holes. When you are ready to drill, attach the mount and backing boards to the boat without sealant using the 2 inner holes, then drill 1 outer hole, insert the bolt, then drill the second hole and insert its bolt to make sure it all works. Remove and add sealant. Reattach mount and backing boards but do not tighten down completely for 24 hours. After the sealant has set, tighten it all down.

I would first check with CD as to if by some glitch, the bracket they furnished you was off just a bit in it's dimensions. I say this because even the CD website in the outboard bracket section indicates that the bolt holes line up with the older Garhauer brackets. My Cat is an '89 and I replaced the 2 spring with the 4 spring and the bolt holes lined up...so I am first wondering why your bracket does not similarly line up. I know that it is a really outside chance that they furnished you a bracket that had the holes slightly off but the fact that they are close - only off by 1/2 diameter of the hole, it could be an error that is at least worth providing it's centerline dimensions compared to your stern's bracket holes centerline dimensions and see what CD has to say about it.

I was planning on calling them today. However, packing and mailing it back for exchange would be time and $$$.
I don't know if it's worth it.
Just FYI, 1/2 dia. on each side. Just about 1 dia. total.

I would check with them just in case there was an error. I have had mostly very good experiences dealing with companies I purchased products mail order. One in particular:

When my kids were young (this goes way back in time), Wanted to replace a plywood basketball backboard. I really did a lot of research as to what I wanted and found nothing locally that I was interested in. Escalade was the parent company of a a number of sporting goods brands including Wilson and I believe Harvard ping pong tables. Anyway, I could buy there backboard and cantilevered support bracket via a sporting goods store that was located about 20 miles away. They shipped the products to the store but when I peeled off the adhesive paper off the full size Plexiglas backboard, the Plexiglas had a crack. I had to return it via the sporting goods store but they then shipped the replacement backboard direct to my house. I then constructed the cantilevered bracket (it basically supports the backboard about a foot away from the pole). When I went to attach the backboard to it, the plexiglass backboard had a metal welded frame with keyholes slots but the slots did not match up with the bracket. I checked the drawing and it appeared that the vertical welded members on the backboard was welded 180 degrees around the wrong way. If the vertical members were turned upside down and welded, then the keyhole slots would line up perfectly. The backboard alone cost me well over $200 ! I called up Escalade technical services and the guy agreed with me after checking the drawings and how I described what was shipped. He indicated that they had no stock left but production from Mexico was going to start up again in about 2-3 months and they would ship directly to me another backboard. I asked him how do I ship the backboard I received back to them and he indicated that the shipping is expensive and that he trusted me as to how I described the manufacturing mistake and so he indicated I could keep the old backboard, maybe donate it to someone that would try to make new keyholes in it. Since the new backboard would not arrive for about 2-3 months, I made my own keyholes in the backboard and installed it on the bracket and onto the pole. My kids used it that way ever since ! When the new backboard arrived, I just kept it in it's box in the garage and about 10 years later, gave it to a friend at work.

So...the mfr ate the cost of the backboard and the shipping the new one to me !! So...you never know how these things turn out. Anyway, I am sure we would all be interested as to what CDhas to say as to why the holes do not match up on your new bracket when their description indicates it ill match up.

I don't see how there could be an error. CD only sells the one mount. The only difference is how many springs are on it but it is still the same mount. All of the mounts (2,3,4 springs) have the same hole spacing that is, Vertical hole spacing center to center: 5" Horizontal hole spacing center to center: 6-1/2" There has to be a piece of this puzzle that is missing. Is the mount that you took off the boat look identical to the new one?

OK, yes the mount looks identical except it was 2 spring.
I called CD today. I was told that all the new mounts are "hand made by one guy" and that may account for the problem. They could do nothing for me.
Just have to get the drill out. Not a big deal. Just FYI for everyone.
