Did anyone else see the TV news report tonight of a Texaco station, in the SF Bay Area I think, that had their Regular at $3.49, mid-grade at $3.79, and Premium at $4.29? The cheapest no-name gas in Sacramento is now about $2.29, and climbing a few more cents almost every day this week. At the rate it's climbing, it will be over $3.00 for the cheapest gas in a couple more weeks. I expect this will certainly give pause to anyone stopping at a fuel dock to fill up a big cabin cruiser with 150 or 200 gallons of gas or diesel. The average jet ski owner burns about 20 gallons in a day I've heard, so maybe these gas prices will discourage a few of them as well. I'm sure not looking forward to filling my pickup next time it's empty. It's a Dodge (Cummins diesel), and that 36 gallon tank will cost me over a hundred smackers to fill if fuel hits $3.00, which seems likely. I am even having second thoughts about putting "Quiet Time" in a SF Bay slip next month for the summer. With only the truck to drive, a round trip to the Bay Area to play with the boat would cost almost $32 just for fuel (ouch!).

I would pay for the gas if it were me. $32.00 is a small price to pay for a weekend of sailing with a lot less stink potters on the water.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Plus if you stayed at home you would probably spend that much on other entertainment anyway.

I don't think here in the Northeast [New York State] that the price of gas is going to affect the guy who owns the PWC or the $20,000 and up cruisers that much. For the short season they have [five months at the most] thet will give up something else. Most of them on our lake probably have already paid there deposit for a slip this year. My wife and myself have altered our sailing plans but not because of filling up that 3 gallon tank for the Honda 8 hp. We are just going to go up to our lake during the week, stay over night a couple of nights and miss all the PWC's and high powered stuff. Don Peet can attest to the traffic on "The Great Sacandaga Lake" during the in season. The snow banks are going down here in upstate N.Y. and its almost time to close the dam gates and start filling the lake. 60 days to launch.

Frank, we live in East Texas and are planning the Near Bahamas in April and the North Channel in July/August.

Bear,

last time I checked the lake level, it appeared that it was at the bottom, plenty of room now to get under the Batchellerville Bridge, right <img src=icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle>, so it should be rising now, or very, very soon.

Yes the power traffic is particularly heavy in Mayfield Bay, where I start from, and around the shallow areas where the power boats go to ski and swim.

Hope our sailing paths will cross this summer, during our short season!

Re. Gas Prices,

Our gas prices are right around national average, and while up, I suspect not enough to have a significant impact on boating activity in our neck of the woods. I suspect bear is right, our season is short and people will give up some other activities to go boating. The gas prices doesn't seem to have much impact on snow mobilers this winter. They are still out in force, I suspect for many of the same reasons. Short season, and we haven't had a real winter for several years.

Don,
I noticed a little rise in the lake level tonight on the USGS
web site for Sacandaga. I suspect it is more ice melt than shutting the gates on the dam. I gotta believe they will leave the gates open a
little longer this year because of heavy snow pack in the mountains.
For fifteen years I kept a **** with a high powered Mercury outboard at what used to be Grandview Marina, knew where all the little islands were that popped up as the season wore down, really had them all to myself, but I suspect everyone uses them these days
Incidently, when your club races start this year if anyone needs a crew member [including you] I would be available just for gaining the knowlege of how its done. Please keep me in mind.

Bear,

I'm thinking of trying the "Around the Lake Race" on June 28th. I don't normally skipper because I have always had trouble with crew, and never raced the 25, but . . .? Last year I crewed for the Charity and Back to School Regettas. My problem with the "Around the Lake" is needing to be back Saturday evening because Sunday is my work day! But lets talk and see.
