Good point about standard controllers wasting power and sunshine time. That said, my 30W panel plus my shunting controller keep me topped up for each weekend. If I sailed every day, then I'd go for the extra $$$.

The other point to make with the MPPT is it can more effectively allow use of the solar current for running DC appliances after the batterys have attained an even quicker charge than the old controllers. In effect you are using current that would be lost to run your TV, stereo, etc during your sun day. Your batteries will stay at full charge unless you are using more than the surplus amps from the panels. MPPT's handle this more effectively than the old units. Chief
