If you subscribe to Sail Magazine's "Sail Feed," then you might have seen this. Nevertheless, I thought I'd post a link to their article for those who haven't heard about this replica Viking ship.
My grandparents immigrated to this country from Norway, so this has a special place in my heart. I think this is absolutely fascinating, and one of the most beautiful vessels I've ever seen ... 'too bad they are embroiled in a bureaucratic mess right now.
The videos are pretty cool, especially the second one. The third video is a little slow (they are leaving a harbor), but I was still mesmerized by it. They clearly have some sort of auxiliary power, but it isn't hard to imagine what it might have looked like with oars propelling it out to the wind.
'Sure would like to take a sail on it!

Can't wait for it's arrival at the Mystic Seaport! With a little luck, I'll be able to see it under sail on the way to or from our area.

I believe, also, a replica of America is heading your way . . . . . was off Norwalk last weekend, going to Fairfield then New haven en-route north. A real beauty -- and . . . . . fast!

America was here in June... I can't find any information about another stop coming up. I'll ask my friends directly across from the Seaport to let me know if they see her.

My brother sent me a few pics when the Draken Harald passed through the Eisenhower lock going upriver on the St Lawrence Seaway. Amazing what was accomplished in those times.
(Unfortunately when I tried to upload the last image (full broadside) I kept getting a "connection was reset" error ???)
It is way cool. I was in Chicago last week and it was featured on the local news. Can't recall if it was on Lake Michigan or on its way to Lake Michigan. I didn't see it tho. The article said it was a replica of the original plans and it is over 100' long! Would be nice to see. So what was the political problem? Why was it snared in red tape? Just goes to show you: give a guy a hat and a whistle and all of a sudden he thinks he's in charge...!

Hi Bruce ... it has to do with pilot fees. The article explains it pretty well. Here is a quote from the article:
[They] "were told by Canadian authorities that their pilot fees for the lakes would be waived. But the Americans evidently were not consulted, and the Coast Guard claims the U.S. fees, payable by all non-recreational foreign vessels navigating the lakes, cannot be waived without passing an act of Congress. Which, as we all know, is a virtual impossibility."
Bummer!

It's too bad it's caught in bureaucracy. If you don't call it a recreational vessel, I don't know what else you'd call it. It's a historical replica, it doesn't carry cargo, it's a non-profit venture, and it's primary purpose is to entertain and educate spectators in their leisure hours. That sounds "recreational" to me.
Apparently it has become a political issue, and the issue is being pressed by the pilots' association.
Congress has legislative power and the President can adopt administrative rules, and I see no reason why they couldn't resolve the issue if they were of a mind to. Congress can move amazingly fast when motivated to do so. They should amend the Great Lakes pilotage law to exempt non-profit historical replica vessels that carry no commercial cargo. Easy peasy, if they want to do it.

...Congress can move amazingly fast when motivated to do so...
...when they're in town, which they're not. (MY condo board can decide things over e-mail, but we're not worried about being hacked by Russian spys...) I would think maybe the Prez could proclaim the vessel "recreational," which would seem to settle it.
Nice pix!
