I was on catalinadirect and saw teh chainplates upgrade kit and also a standard rigging replacememnt kit. I think i'm going to pick them up. my question is, the standard rigging kit comes with an optional backstay kit. is that necessary for casual cruising in moderate conditions with the occasional 20 know breeze?

Don't exactly understand the question. Do you need a backstay? YES! Do you need to change the one you have? Depends on it's condition.

I think the backstay is an extra that doesn't come with the standard replacement kit because the shrouds and forestay are standard and the backstays varied. Adjustable and fixed. Catalina Direct wants you to measure the existing backstay and send them that dimension so you get a replacement that fits.
