I know that this topic has been around the horn, so to speak. Unfortunately I cannot find the thread to all of the conversation about it. So, my question is about the Turning Ball Shaft removal.
This weekend I lowered the keel enough the replace the cable. I removed the hose, as it looked ugly. The turning ball has a center grove shped like a pentagon. I have on on order. meanwhile, the shaft did not simple slip out. slight coaxing with a small hammer did not encourage it enough to move it. How much force should be required to remove the shaft...are there any special techniques? Or is it a simple case of getting the correct size hammer?

Hi Bill,

Can you see the ends of the pin? When I replaced mine, there was fiberglass covering both ends ... a LOT of it. After I used a dremel tool to grind off the fiberglass, the pin slipped out. I used some sort of punch (an old screwdriver would do) and a rubber mallet ... the pin came right out without a lot of pounding.

My best guess is that there is still some fiberglass covering one or both ends of the pin. Here is a photo of the pin and turning ball ... you can see that there is nothing to hold the pin in place once you get the fiberglass off the ends of it:

I suppose it's possible that there could be some corrosion between the pin and the ball ... maybe a good penetrating oil or something like WD-40 would help soften it up.

Sometimes the pin has been glassed in and you need to do a little chipping to get it to move. I didn't have that problem but I read that someone did a little while back on this forum.

I am replacing the turning ball and cable this weekend. My question is, is the clevis pin on the keel attachment a special grade or will an off the shelf clevis pin work. Mine is a bit worn and I would like to replace it with a new one before May 1.

As I was removing the hose, I kept remembering the picture of the 'Ugly Turning Ball'. When I finally managed to wrestle the hose from the pipe it was on, I discovered that the PO had dropped a nut and a finish washer down the hose, jamming the ball as the cable would rise. Got a new ball coming be here tomorrow...I'll install it Tuesday. Buzz, I did not see any thing but steel where the axle seems to be. So I think the suggetion of WD40 and proper tolls will work.
I'll let you know. I'll try to get a picture of the ball and see if I can master my scanner.

About the clevis pin, I'd say any of proper size would be OK. As long as it is good stainless, built for marine rigging. The reaason I say that is when I picked up ny new cable from the Catalina dealer he went to a bin and picked out one that fit pretty well. When I went to install the cable, the clevis pin and cotter pin were missing. So I went to the marina store and picked up new ones. Along with a couple of washers to fit between the fork on the keel and the head of the clevis pin on one side and the cotter pin on the other. Why the washers? It just seemed neater.
Before I pulled my old cable through the hose and past the turning ball I should have nipped off the frayed end of the cable. The ragged ends are what got jammed around the ball. Of course, if that had not happened I would likely not have seen the ugly ball and the weary hose. so actually I am better off, all in all.
