Hi there,

I'm finally tackling the job of refinishing my teak. I know some folks like the natural grey weathered look, but I like varnished teak.

Is there a purpose, other than decoration, for the thin teak trim strip on the exterior of the cabin? It is located over the windows, where the cabin side meets the roof?

There were some splits in my rail, but a new rail from CD is 85 bucks each, so west epoxy it is.

Frank: I've seen that strip on the 89-90 boats, and figured it was intended to help with "upscaling" the price to cover the cost of what was becoming an expensive 25-footer. It's sorta like Volvo putting leather seats in what was once a taxi-cab-type car to help justify the price. On the C-25, I might not be able to justify the appearance based on the effort involved in keeping that long, thin strip looking good (without staining the cabin sides), even though it is pretty.

That little strip is a perfect example of what happens to teak when it's left "natural"--it deteriorates from UV, mildew, and simple drying out. Small, thin pieces end up breaking from the deterioration. Sorry, nature lovers, but it's true. Oil it often, finish it occasionally, or watch it go away.

You are right Dave, it has gotten brittle. If I remove it I now have lots of holes to patch.
I have found that it really is easier to remove teak to refinish it.
I'll just refinish it, and the new cabin cover I'm going to have made will be long enough to cover it, so maybe I won't have to do the job again soon.

So maybe that's what I could name my boat--VOLVO! Nah

Those little strips above the windows are , I believe, called "eyebrows" in the Catalina Owners/Parts manuals. If yours are badly deteriorated, Catalina Direct might be ably to supply replacements. They have no function that I know of except to look fancy.
