Hi folks,

I have a new rudder coming for my 25. My current one is really trashed, and also is delaminating.
Do the new balanced rudders have the same delamination problem?
I thought that I might put 4 coats of Interlux Interprotect on the rudder before 3 coats of bottom paint. What do you think?
Any better ideas?
No, a rudder condom is out of the question.

I have a balanced rudder that I repaired because it was starting to split so I guess they too have the same splitting problem. After repairing the rudder, I applied an epoxy barrier coat to prevent water infiltration.

Don: Did you get it out of the cold in the winter? The foam core can swell if it freezes with some moisture in it.

Another warning I heard somewhere was that if you leave the new rudder in the sun on the hard (including on a trailer), the bottom paint can absorb enough heat to swell the foam core and split the rudder. For that reason, I hang the rudder just before launching.

Is my rudder out of the cold? Well, yes and no. It's currently in my unheated garage. I've been looking at it ocasionally throughout the winter and I haven't seen any evidence of splitting

Don,
Where did you get your rudder from? Catalina Direct or Catalina Yachts ?

Would you have any objection to my asking what it cost you…?
I am going to give the “ Spirit” a much needed fix up … standing rigging wire etc.
Also I am thinking about another outboard, can’t make up my mind on what to get… lots of views. Kind of like – (never hear any one complain about the new car, only after its paid for)…pretty though to gripe about a motor that just cost more then the kids braces…

My balanced rudder came with my boat when I bought it, but last spring while I was on the phone with Catalina Direct I asked them about the balanced rudder. At that time they quoted prices of $428.00 w/o pintles and $443.00 w/pintles.

I just forked out $261.74 for a 3rd generation rudder from Catalina Yachts. I had to go through the plant in Ca. rather than the one here in FL. It was delivered within a week! And next weekend when I haul out I will be installing it. One of many improvements I am planning for next week.

I replaced my rudder summer before last when my original (delaminating) rudder suddenly snapped in half during a 4th of July sail with good wind and a lot of weatherhelm (what a ride!).

I bought my new balanced rudder from CD for about $550 (w/o pintles). It took 5 weeks for it to arrive but what a difference in performance. Less weatherhelm and does not round up as easily. It's a lot lighter and seems to be better built than the original. It was a challenge to install due to it's different shape. Getting the pintles to line up was a challenge (especially with the boat in the water!).

So far the rudder is holding up well with no signs of delamination. I do, however, put the boat on the hard during the off-season and store the rudder.

Even though its Delaminating, it might fit in Tom Kings budget. I know he bought a new boat without a rudder this past winter. Even if he uses it as a template for a new one.

considering a new balanced rudder myself when my time on the hard comes up-soon I hope!. What is the Catalina calif. factories email address or phone number? Catalina Direct wants $600+ (shipping, etc) for a new balanced one-sounds like the factory may be cheaper.

want to change it out on the hard-not in the water! I doubt I could bend over that far anyway :(

Keep in mind....that the 3rd generation rudder for the c250 is offered at cost...to solve Catalina's mistakes.
