I looked into a bimini top but it just does not fit our needs. I would not sail with the top up if I had one so we made a 10'x10'boom tent out of sunbrella material to use while not sailing. This keeps the sun out of most of the cockpit and out of the companionway area. My wife likes the sun so the stern rail seats are not cover by the tent. The canopy shaped like a tent keeps the sun out all day long even in the mornings and in the evenings. We did a test this past weekend. I laid the thermostat on a cockpit cushion before the canopy was up it read 129degrees in the sun. After the canopy was up the temp dropped to 85 degrees in the shade.<img src=icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle>
i made a similar sun shade last year. the only thing i did different was to leave a inch and a half pocket across the ends that lay by the boom and the backstay, sewing one end shut, and bought 2 pieces of 1 inch pvc pipe about 6 feet long (or the width of your canopy) i slide the pvc into the pocket by the boom and into the pocket by the back stay.the shade now lays across the boom. the pvc is very lightweight and causes no problems. and makes it easier to ge on or off the boat. i sewed two long straps and attached a plastic hasp or spring clip to the end of the strap and attach it to the loop at the stern seats, smaller straps and spring clips are attached to the end near the boom and clip onto the side rail where the life lines are attached. works great. to store, we just slide out the pvc and they store on the shelf behind the backrests of the sofa's, out of the way, then fold up the sunbrella.
