my mast is down and the spreaders move a bit, of course there isn't any tension on them from the shrouds, is that normal?

If you mean they wiggle in their sockets, that shouldn't be a problem. I guess it's really dependent on what your definition of "a bit" is. 1/2" either way - no big deal. 3-4" either way, I'd look at corrosion at the socket and think about replacement.

Do you have the original spreader sockets on the mast? The '78 came with aluminum sockets that are known to crack, and were replaced by stainless sockets in the early 80s. The new ones are available from Catalina Direct. Spreaders take a lot of stress, and a failure can bring the mast down.

How do i find out if i have the originals or the new replacements. is it obvious? or do i basically have to determine if it's aluminum or steel?

Steven.

According to CD, the old aluminum spreader bracket has a triangular shape, whereas the stainless steel bracket is rectangular. In the picture below, you can see the rectangular stainless steel spreader bracket. On the old aluminum bracket, the part where the spreader is inserted into the bracket is shaped like an inverted triangle.
