I want to install a plug and receptacle for my Honda electric start motor. As I trailer sail my boat a few times a year, on vacations, I want to make it easy to mount and dismount the motor. The electric wires for the Honda would have to be snaked a long way to get to the battery. Right now I have it bolted to an extension wire. Kinda Mickey Mouse. I think I may get a Marinco trolling motor receptacle and plug (Model 12VCP) and mount the receptacle in the transom and them just plug it in. The unit is good for an 8 gague wire. You can see it in the West Catalog page 544 Item # 1422591, or the Marinco Website. I figure I'll also have to grease it up with dielectric grease. Also mount it so it doesns't interfire with the raising and lowering of the motor on my new Garelick mount. Anybody out there have any thoughts on this idea?
The new Hondas present an interesting problem: The cable is hard-wired into the powerhead, which seems like a good thing, based on the totally corroded connector on the motor that came with Passage. I put a rubber boot over a hole in the transom, and then mounted two screw terminals at the back of the quarterberth. That puts all connections out of the weather and salt water. It takes only a minute to disconnect. I ran a heavy cable from the terminals to a battery on-off switch at the galley, and then to the battery. That's so I can leave the electric starter switched off while the boat is in the slip, and turn it on by reaching down the companionway from the cockpit.

I just bought a new motor with electric start and alternator. Can you guys break this topic down to the simplest level so I can see if this will be an impending problem?
From what I have read, the wires coming off the motor that connect to the battery are a PITA to connect and reconnect. and your looking for some sort of a plug setup to make this easier. Is this correct?
<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote> tell me more. Is the female end mounted in your Transom. Do you have manufacturer or part numbers? <hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" size=2 id=quote>
I looked in the Grainger cat where I got mine and I can't find it right now. It does not mount to anything. I'll look some more . . .
I did this with a Marinco shore-power connector. Mounted the female on the transom, and the male on the wires that came from the engine (Nissan 9.9). The Marinco has three terminals, so I just use 2 of them. It can handle 30 amps, which, I figure, is perfectly adequate for starting current to the motor. It was easy to install and set up. Comes with a boot for the male connector, and a cover for the female mounted in the transom.
