That is the same model that I bought for myself at Christmas. Boy, are you going to enjoy this thing. I have spent many hours playing with mine and will suggest this to you: DON'T try to read and understand the manual until after you have used the "quick start guide" for several times out, then graduate to the more complicated book. I took mine with me today when I went to Indianapolis (about 150 miles) to shop at West Marine and Sailboats, Inc. As I have said earlier, I take mine with me every time I leave my home area. That has accomplished 2 things: I have been able to play around with it to the point that I'm very comfortable with it, in many situations and can "navigate" around the capabilities comfortably, and it also has helped me many time when I find myself in unfamiliar territory. Just knowing which way is North can save me several wrong turns. Again, I just used the "quick start" for the first 2-3 months, then I spent my lunch every day for about 2 weeks going through the book and doing all of the steps as I went. I will still have to refer to the book occasionally, but am VERY comfortable with it now.
Good luck and give the wife an extra hug.... she really did you a favor getting this level of quality for you!!
If you like, you can e-mail me and we can work on it together.
Invest in the Garmin BlueCharts. They run about 90 bucks. They are maps just like the NOAA nautical charts. Best thing to ever happen to GPS. They come on a CD and you download them from a computer to the unit with a cable that was included with mine. You can go to Garmins website, email the chartography group and ask for a sample of the map in the area you will be using it. That alone should convince you of its worth. I second the "give the wife and extra hug" I got mine for my anniversary last year. The BlueCharts are awesome. Email me if you have any questions. JS
When I gopt mine, I purchased the "Mapsource - Fishing Hot Spots", because it offers water depths. I believe that the next purchase will be the Blue Charts.
To your comment about the Quick Start - just be patient and keep playing around with your new toy until you have mastered one screen after another. Plug it in and have the wife drive you down the expressway for 20-30 miles and you will see what I mean. By all means, don't be afraid to push the buttons. I pushed the MOB (man over boward) and it took me 3 weeks to figure how to delete it, but that's a learning situation, as well.
<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote> ...do you all recommen the external antenna on handhelp gps's? <hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" size=2 id=quote> Hi Steven...
You shouldn't need the external antenna unless you want to use the GPS inside your cabin. That may be marginal--if so, you might improve the situation by positioning it near a window. Try it before you waste the money.
