California has outlawed sales of new 2 strokes as of Jan 1, 2002. West Marine as of now is only selling 4 strokes. The 6hp Mercury (same as the Nissan, I understand) 4 stroke weighs in at 55.4 lbs. They no longer make an 8hp. The next step up is a 9.9
Hi Dave... You're right to wonder about your bracket for a 4-stroke. Not only does it weigh more, but the new ones have high-thrust props and gearing that increase the stresses to those of a 2-stroke with almost twice the power.
Thanks, Dave B. But Merc does have a long shaft for the 6hp 4 stroke -- again it is half the weight of the 9.9. I'm concerned about having enough power left over for heavy seas. I know it will push it a hull speed with ease in good seas.
I got a long-shaft Merc 9.9/4-stroke for Paloma, my C25 swing keel and I like it. I'm 61 & pretty strong, but gratefully accepted a helping hand mounting it on the transom mainly due to the awkwardness factor. I added a couple of rubber bungees to the spr
Dave, I have a 6hp 2 stroke on Wind Shadow and while it will push her at 5 knots it has no reserve if the wind picks up or I get into a current. Try for at least 8hp or better.
Use a 2000 6HP Johnson on our boat with no problems. Will move her along at hull speed with the high-thrust prop we installed. The Johnson 6 HP and 8 HP are the same motor, save for the RPM at which they run. A motor will only produce rated h

Having sailed the San Juan Islands this past year with a 8Hp Honda I would say No the 6 would be to small. I do have the original two armed outboard mount. After having the spring break on the mount while in the islands I rigged a small block and tackle t
I have posted before that I have a Yamaha 9.9 four stroke electric start that I like...a lot. It weighs over 100lbs. Honestly, it is probably MORE power than I need: 7+ knots at full throttle, which is rare, but 6.3 knots at a little over 1/2 throttle,
Hi: Two cents from a newbie. I have a 5 hp Nissan 4-stroke long shaft on my 1984 Fin Keel C-25. I don't have enough experience to comment, other than to say that I have motored for several hours, even in heavy chop and unfavorable current and have alwa
My 1985 Suzuki 6 hp is like the Energizer Bunny -- it keeps going and going and going...
Despite the other responses in this thread, I and many others around me feel a 6 hp is sufficient for a boat this size. As a reference, I regularly sail
