a friend of mine tied a stopper knot in the main shhet so if you have an unexpected jibe, the boom will not reach the shrouds. it's a pretty cool trick, i tied a knot so the boom's maximum swing is about 1 foot before the shrouds.
that's a fine idea, I think, but I prefer a preventer. I have them on both sides of my boat, so it's very easy to set them, then gybe when you need. I used to use the boom vang, but it was too much hassle. I sail on the Columbia River, so gybes are more often than in more open water....
