Hello All,

I'm in the process of getting all my mast lights working, and I have a question. The light half way up the mast that shines forward shows continuity when using a voltage tester ( think that's what it is ), but only when you press the metal blades that grip the light. I'm thinking those metal blades don't have continuity unless being firmly pressed on because there may be some corrosion/rust on them. Does anyone agree with this? If this is the case, how should I clean those metal blades, should I try to gently use a wire brush, or steel wool?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Ben,

Both of your ideas will work. A dremel (or similar) rotary tool with a small grinding attachment will work too. Don't forget to "dust" the terminals on the light bulb as well as the blade contacts.

I have always used a pencil with an abrasive erasor. Neat trick.

Ben,

I agree with the others - clean the contacts. I use fine sandpaper. I also smear the base of the bulb (<b><i>but not the glass</i></b>) with waterproof grease before reinstalling.

One tip I've read about ... never, never use steel wool on a boat as the metal dust will cause rust stains that will be very difficult to remove. Bronze wool was the suggested alternative.

I use fine sandpaper to clean electrical contacts.

Cleaning small contacts?

"Borrow" an abrasive nail file from your Admrial.

I use LPS-3 afterwards to slow down the corrosion.

If you haven't used LPS-3, it's a very handy product. It sprays on thin from an areosol can, penetrates, then sets up to a cosomline-like grease. Expensive, but worth it. I haven't seen anything else quite like it on the market.
