(play on words of old movie) I was planning to run my reefing line and boom vang line back to the cockpit and install some clutches on the cabin top. At first I thought I'd put the boom vang line on the starboard side next to my halyard, then logic set-in and I realized that I should put my single-line reefer next to the halyard so it'd be more handy to reef when under way. So I guess I'll put my boom vang on the port side next to my jib halyard (hank-on jib). Any comments or suggestions for bringing lines aft? Thanks
That sounds about right. The main halyard and the reefing line are good to keep together. You can ease the main and take up the reefing line very easily that way. The boom vang is good to port, that's where I have mine. You might also consider a down haul and out haul also led back to the cockpit. They help you flatten the sail in a freshening breeze. it un-powers the sail before you have to reef.
I stiched together some canvas bags from some blue sunbrella and screwed them to the outside of the cabin below the clutches to keep the tails out of the way.
For me reefing madness is when I have waited too long to act and reefing becomes a lot more difficult when seas are building.
<font size=2><font face='Comic Sans MS'> Dave, I place the Main halyard, then the reefing line then the topping lift on the same side (port) as the cabintop winch. I can reef in under a minute single handed. This is a photo of the triple rope clutches but on the starboard side without the winch.

I was looking at your triple rope clutches and noticed you don't have winches after the stoppers.. do you have 2 or 4 winches? I was thinking about bringing my lines to the cockpit and would love to only have 2 (self tailing) winches.. is it possible?
On the port side are jib halyard, spinnaker halyard and pole topping lift, all stopped with a triple clutch. I moved the jib halyard winch from the mast to just above the galley light fixture.
On the stbd. side are all mainsail controls (except outhaul). A triple clutch controls the main halyard and single line first and second reefs. Above those lines are three cam cleats which control the vang, downhaul, and boom topping lift. No winch. To raise the mainsail that last bit to the masthead, I temporarily wrap the halyard around the stbd. primary winch and tug sideways on the bight of line between the (closed) clutch and the winch. This trick is only convenient for moving a few inches of line, but on a boat this size that's all you need to finish raising the sail.
The 8:1 outhaul is controled by a pivoting cam cleat hanging under the boom about 4' aft of the gooseneck.

Two for the sheets and one on the port side cabintop behind the clutches, sorry I don’t have a photo of it yet. I keep the outhaul and drifter/spin halyard on the starboard side and never see a need for a winch there. The winch on the port side handles the main, reefing line and topping lift. It is a Lewmar #7 and is not self tailing.
