Hi folks! You will have to pardon our ignorance as we are really new parents of a 1983 Tanzer 7.5! We sail in a local lake as we are a "few" miles from the ocean and it is time to sand down the keel, repaint the hull, sand and Cetol the teak and change the boat's name! Help! I have sent a note to the man who sells parts for the Tanzers but I have a million questions.
Is there a standard paint or finish used as I have been told to put back on whatever you sanded off?!
Can we use electric sanders or is elbow grease required?
what is the protocol for changing the name of a sailboat?
We have a 2000E kit-how much is usually needed for a 25' boat?
Does anyone own a Tanzer that they could help us out?

Congratulations on the addition to the family! Did you pass out cigars and say, <i>"It's a boat!"</i>?

Antifouling paint comes in many forms and the kind you should use depends on your sailing environment (saltwater, fresh), the type of sailing you do(racing, cruising), whether you trailer a few weeks per year, leave it in for a couple of months per year, or leave it in year round. You have to figure out what your specific needs in antifouling paint are and then find a product that best suits those needs.

Yes to both! You can use sanders to remove the old paint, but you may find that the paper clogs so fast that it's almost useless, thereby requiring you to hand scrape or find an alternative like a chemical strippers. When I did my bottom job last spring, I hand scraped the hull first then finished it off with a sander. Here are two links to recent bottom job discussions. One mentions a chemical stripper that sounds like it has promise.

Here is a link that describes a boat renaming ceremony,

I'm not sure, but a lot depends on your hull configuration and the thickness of the epoxy barrier coat you want to achieve. Check out this link to Interlux paints. This site has a lot of good info.

Personally, I've never sailed a Tanzer. A fellow sailor in my marina had a Tanzer 22, but he sold it last year and bought a Catalina 27. He sailed the Tanzer many times up in the North Channel of Lake Huron and he said the boat was solid and sailed beautifully.

If you have any more questions, just ask. Good luck.

The only thing I would add to what Don said is, be careful to only sand off the old bottom paint. Avoid sanding away the gelcoat underneath the bottom paint.

Thank you already to the gentlemen who responded to my questionS! My husband may be able to take a breath and relax now!
Our Tanzer is meant for lake sailing for now ie fresh water and we hope to get to the Gulf Islands by next year-salt water. She is strictly for pleasure now and if we are in a race, it will be purely accidental, I can promise you! Our intention is get really good this year so as to charter a boat in the BVI's next spring while it is still cold and blustery in our part of the world!
Thanks again and we'll keep asking if you keep answering!

Hi Debbie:
I took all the bottom paint off of my Catalina 25 before I did a whole new barrier coat. You wont need to go that far but here are some tips. West marine has a compatability chart and if you know what is on the boat now it will tell you if you can change or what to use. Once the boat is out of the water evaluate the condition of the paint. It may not need to come off at all. If its way to thick and looks like heck ok sand it and repaint. If its only flaking in places (mostly around the waterline) rough it up with 80 grit at those areas and re paint. Your boat should take one gallon to do it. If you use an electric sander you want an orbital sander with 8 holes in the sanding pad. The sander should be attached to a 5 Hp minimum shop vac. The vac should have a filter canister and a filter bag (double filter). The marina or yard may rent you one or find a friend who has this set up. If not you may need to purchase the gear. I did and now I am done I use the gear at home for projects.
I used 80 grit paper to remove the paint and 60 grit in thick spots. Be carefull not to hold the sander on one area for to long. Its easy to judge and see the paint come off. I also want to be sure you ware a resperator when sanding. I made a platform of milk crates and planks so I could lay on my back when under the boat and it helped.
If your not totaly reconditioning you wont need to do all that. Green Scotts pads also work well for roughing up edges.

Hi Debbie... Doug's advice on the vaccuum is important if you use a power sander--that dust is seriously toxic in a way that could affect you years later. For that reason, my preference is to remove most of the paint with a chemical stripper, so that you can easily contain it as you scrape or peel. The marine stores have peel-away kits where you cover the stripper with gauze or newspaper and then peel it off with most of the paint--scraping what's left. A little sanding will probably be required to get the last traces, but less is better. The environment, and anyone else within 50 yards downwind, will thank you.

There is a stipper out there called Captain Lee's. No it isn't some guy who shows up at wedding showers or secretary parties. Its an automotive striper that is been refred to as one of the best and easy to use. Look for it.

That's what we all say Debbie <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> ! Any signs of blisters on the bottom of that boat? My second boat was a Tanzer 16, we have a few Tanzer 22s and one Tanzer 7.5 on our lake (Pittsburgh.) Nice boats!

I used Interlux 2000E as a water barrier and their VC17M for antifouling - bulletproof combination.
Good Luck!

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>Hey OJ-trust me! I will have my own heart stop if we thought we were in someone else's way! This boat is a hoot-fun, fast, reactive, WOW! What took us so long?
My husband has been away for a week and I can't wait for him to see the responses! This could just work, you know! You have to understand that we are a 12 hour drive through the mountains to the ocean so we are lake sailors for now!
Thanks for all the help!

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote> To be honest, we handed out a birth announcement stating that we had added a new member to our fleet! It was pretty cool, actually!
Thanks for all the help and I will study the links tomorrow to see what we can do! I'm a nurse so if I can save a dieing heart, I should be able to prepare a hull right???? I said, RIGHT?
