Today was the opening day party for our club, I was incharge of getting stuff ready. If you looked at the weather in the news california has been haveing some raining weather. Probably not to the standards most of you live with but for CA it is a lot. I didn't get much stuff because I thought only the die hards would be there, what a mistake. I got there early with the stuff and went to put flags up on the boat. There was a little larger group than I thought, but managable. Everyone was helping some rig masts and launch. When my wife and kids showed we did a little more of this and then went sailing with another club member. Nice easy sail, few rain drops landing on our heads, but cool. It was getting alittle late and I said lets drop me off at the dock and the rest could keep sailing. Our friend was stearing at the time and he pointed out the funnel cloud forming in the distance. Yes this is central California and that stuff doesn't happen here.
They dropped me off and kept going. As I was lighting the barbeque the thunder boomed. Boats started heading in about this time. I also got a look at the number of people there, not the hole club, but far more than I was expecting. Fortunatly I had a volunteer go get some more hot dogs and hamburgers while I got the fire going. Everyone brought great side dishes and there were even a vary few hambugrers and dogs left.
As I was starting the fire, Casey my six year old came up from the boat. He said "we only crashed into the dock a little bit, and the scratch on the boat isn't too big."
The admrial met me on the way, remember she is the horse person not the boat person, and explained no one could figure out how to take the sails down. When it rains here the predominant wind direction takes a 180 degree shift making docking a down wind experience. Fortunatly the wind had died enough to make it a small bump, and the scratch really a scrape, isn't too big.
Even though we got off of the lake and there was a light drizzle everyone had a great time, we were with our boats on the water. OH, as an added bonus Everett, the younger, was fast asleep when we got home.

SPLASH! Yesterday was also my first time out this year. The weather over Folsom Lake was cloudy, with intermittant rain showers, and a few rolls of thunder off in the distance. But the wind was great! I sailed the boat back and forth across the lake for 6 hours before the wind faded in the afternoon. There was a a period of 40 minutes or so where I had to roll up the genny, and the boat was syill making high-5's (knots) beam reaching under main alone! A fantastic day, despite the unsettled weather. By the end of the 6 hours, the GPS track log was showing 23.3 NM for the day. Yahoo!

Sailing in the rain ? You mean there is sailing when its not raining.
Here in the Puget Sound area sailing in the rain is a given. If it's warm it can be realy nice. The best time I have ever had was a sunset/night sail. The water had phosphoresent algae and as the rain hit the water it created small spots of light. It was beautiful and hard to explain how wonderfull it was. Even sailing in a cold winter storm with rain can be a real experiance.

My wife still says one of her favorite sailing days was last year with Ed Montague on his boat at Lake Don Pedro. It was a March day with clouds cool weather and a nice light rain. Beautiful.

Doug, here in central California images are best remembered on rainy days because those days are few and far between. Our average rain fall is less than 9 inches per year, I think you get that in half an hour. A couple of weeks ago we were having dinner and noticed that not only was it raining, but hail was falling too. When I took the elder to his karate class the white stuff was 2 inches thick and it was snow. The last time I really remember any snow in the valley was 1976 when I was in high school. There was a light dusting, school had to close down because no one, even the teachers, would go back to class.

Finally stopped puttering on the boat and went out Friday in the pouring rain down around the Anchorages in SF Bay. Visibility about
1/4 mile. Thought I WAS in the PNW. All my new systems worked.

This time of year and up through August not only do you need a dodger you need an electronic fog knife.
