i'm still undecide between the transome mount, through hull, or puck style see through the hull.

If i use the through hull method, (the stupid qustion part), can i make the hole while the boat is in the water?

No

I just order a new Uniden depth sounder with the in-hull transducer puck. My previous owner glassed in a small box on the inside of the hull behind the cabin steps that he filled with water and mounted the thru-hull transducer on the lid. The lid bolted on with a rubber gasket. It was connected to a electroncs kit-built depth sounder and it all worked very well. However the display is a bit faint and the unit is too large for my taste. Up till now I have always used the swing keel as my depth gauge! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> I plan to use the sounder box he built as the holder for my in-hull puck and I will seal it in with silicon.

Only if you let me tape it for America's Funniest Home Videos! Wasn't this in a Three Stooges movie? You know the one were they're in a boat that's sinking, and Moe and Larry are in the bow bailing, while Curly is aft drilling holes in the bottom of the boat to let the water out!

But seriously, I think you should just consider the no muss, no fuss glue-in puck style transducer and avoid hauling the boat and drilling any holes.

Only if you can find a way to pressurize the cabin. That way the air pressure would keep the water out.
