Well, not yet but if it continues to leak it'll be a live well.

When I took the boat for a test sail the bilge was pretty full of water but every window seal is leaky and shrunken so I assumed (and was reassured by the owner) that it was due to the abundance of rain we've gotten recently.

Yesterday I shop-vac'd the aft bilge dry and also the bilge in the center. Within about 30 minutes I was able to suck another 1/2 gallon or so out. Now that the bilge was dry I was able to see a crack around the base of the area where the keel cable passes through. If you think of that structure as a foot and the cable passes through the ankle area the crack would be around the base of the heel. I can see water seeping into this area and oddly enough the crack and the water seeping in has a blueish tinge to it.

Anybody seen this before? I'm wondering if a DPO over-cranked the keel up and cracked the housing or something. The keel is currently up so I'm wondering if it'll get worse if I put it down.

Please respond via this forum as my email is hosed today. Thanx for any insight/info!

I had the same problem when I bought WindShadow. Matter of fact, she was an insurance writeoff because no one could figure out where the water was coming from and they assumed the worse. Turns out that there is a short piece of bronze pipe with a turnng ball to support the cable so that it does not chew into the fiberglass. The pipe is just glassed into the hull through what looks like a volcano.
1. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FIX THE LEAK WHILE THE BOAT IS IN THE WATER, IT WILL PROBABLY SINK. You cannot keep up with the inflow of water as the pipe is removed to repair it.
2. After the boat is out of the water, lower the keel and support it enough to inspect the cable attachment. If you don't know the age or history of the cable, Replace it. Also a good time to inspect the bolts and hangers for the keel. Look for excesive side to side play on the pin. Remember that this thing weighs 1500lbs. Use Caution.
3. I found that the easiest way to access the problem is to remove the companionway steps and winch assembly. The Winch bolts are hidden under the treadway piece on the top step.
4. Remove the clamp and hose and you will find a short piece of bronze pipe glassed into a volcano looking thingy. I removed the pipe by using a pair of plumber pliers and just twisting the pipe up and out of the volcano. Inspect the turning ball, this is important, if it does not turn easily or is damaged you might as well replace it now because it will just eat up your new cable.
5. Clean down the throat of the volcano with sandpaper to remove any old epoxy and rough the surface for the new epoxy to hold.
6. Clean the bronze pipe with sandpaper to rough it slightly.
7. Paint some slightly thickened epoxy on the pipe and down the throat of the volcano. Have someone under the boat, let the epoxy start to kick and twist the pipe down the throat while the person under the boat makes sure the pipe does not protrude past the edge of the hole and that the turning ball is lined up fore and aft. Otherwise the cable will rub on the pipe.
8. Pour some of the epoxy around the pipe to allow it to seal the upper end of the throat. If the top of the volcano is damaged, a repair with some fiberglass tape wil be necessary
8. Allow the epoxy to cure overnight then replace the cable attachment, reassemble the hose and clamp, reassemble the winch and steps, run the cable up to the winch and while someone takes up the slack, crank the cable back on the winch. Make sure the cable is on the winch correctly and that the cable is in the groove on the back of the turning ball.
9. Add water and enjoy.

Argh, Now that I reread your thread I see that we are not talking about the same area. I think you mean that water is leaking in around the base of the volcano and not the throat. Do you have blue bottom paint? If so that is probably where the tinge is coming from. Sounds like the hull has a crack in it at the base of the volcano or the base is broken loose. I would advise you to get the boat out of the water and inspect this area from underneath. Might need some glass work done.
