When I re-bed my exterior teak trim, How much sealant should I use? Should I just apply it around the surfaces near the screws or should I spread it over the entire surface to be re-attatched?
For the handrails I applied a circle (~3/8" bead) of polysulfide around the screw holes. I only tighten the screws about 90% initially - allowing the sealant to cure for 7-10 days - forming a gasket. Then tighten the rest of the way - trimming the excess.
If you do a small countersink to the hole in the deck and the hole in the bottom of the handrail, the sealant will form an "O-ring", of sorts, that will help it stay sealed better.
