We did a Coast Guard Courtesy inspection (done ourselves just to cover the bases, the real one is next week)

I wanted to remind every one to check the expiration dates on both the flares and on any automatic inflatible PFD's (co2 cartridge). We had flares that expired in '00 some in '04 and some in '97.

A very timely reminder. I keep the expired flares as spares, but make sure I have the current ones in the magazine clipped to the butt on the flare pistol. If kept in a watertight container, the flares will still fire well after the expiration date, so they are OK for spares or for instructional purposes (just don't fire the red ones out on the water unless you're in trouble). Check the continuity on your VHF antenna cable as well, and the signal output if you have a wave meter. A spare antenna that can be wired in if your mast goes over the side is also useful. Check the condition of your PFDs as well, look for sun-rotted thread in the seams, fabric, etc. If you have polypropylene heaving lines that sit out in the sun, replace them as well.

An extra six pack or two stowed in the bilge is a good safety precaution.

Just keep 'em rotated often <img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>, so's they don't start to corrodin' or sumptin, Frank. Wouldn't want 'em to not funkshun proper just when ya need 'em.
