I filled my gas tank last night (tank came with my outboard about 3 years old). After I filled the tank and after closed the top, gas started to come out of the coupling on the tank.

I though that the tank had some type of safety valve that stops the flow until you attach the gas line. Time for a new tank?

Sevearl things can cause this. Did you leave room in the tank (air space) for the fuel to expand when it warms. Did you crack the vent open to alow the expanding fuel tank to vent. And lastly is the fuel fitting ball or check valve seated in the fitting when dissconected from the motor. Remember fuel stored in the ground is cool and when pumped into a container and warmed expanda. If the tank is closed with no open vent it will build pressure. This can cause a platic fuel container to ballon. If the fitting is leaking static (no pressure) You should be able to replace just the fitting.

The hose fittings on my two tanks have spring-loaded balls that close the fitting when the hose is not connected. I suppose they could get gummed up a little. I assume you have the same with a newer engine. Check the movement of the ball, and see if any debris is keeping it from sealing.
