My boat is on the hard at this point and I attached my mainsail yesterday. First I noticed my mast is pretty scratched up. I may take it down next year. What can I do about it or should I not worry about it? I ran my mainsail into the boom and attached the outhaul and pulled tight. I must have 7 feet of line for the out haul do I need all that?
Tom: Without seeing your setup, I'll suggest two possible reasons your outhaul might be that long:
1. Multi-part rig--the outhaul starts at the end of the boom, goes through the clew, back to the boom end, and possibly forward again (using a block) for more purchase.
2. A cleat forward on the boom makes outhaul adjustment easier--particularly when you want to ease it going downwind when the boom is out.
Can the P.O. explain how he set it up?

Superficial scratches should present no serious problem. The mast can be painted, but it's a fairly big job and needs special prep.
As for the long tail on the outhaul, heck carefully to see if the cleat, or a second cleat even, may be installed further down the boom near the gooseneck. I have just installed one there so that I can adjust the outhaul on a reach or run with the boom out. Otherwise, if you are happy with your adjustment point out near the end of the boom, your outhaul can be much shorter. Depending upon your arrangement, 2 to 1 or 4 to 1 purchase, you might only need 1-2' of play in it. I'd cut it off at the cleat when it is in the most eased, loose position you would want. Then, when you tighten the outhaul, you will have less tail to mess with.
