This past winter I sent the sail off of my 14' Banchee to Sail Care for a cleaning and repair. Of course they remove all numbers and emblems during the proccess. No big deal since I don't race this boat and the cost of them replacing these items is more then I wanted to pay. Anyway, we have been thinking of painting a graphic on the sail to make it interesting. We have this wonderful blank canvas and many ideas, the only problem is what sort of paint, marking pen, etc. will work and then last more then one season without fading away? What do you think? Anybody have any experience with this?

Ed,
I'm getting a new head sail and have been thinking of something to do with the old one. New will be a 150 and I don't want to get rid of the 110. My thought is of tie dying the sail. I'll talk to the art teacher at school and ask his opnion. If anything is favorable for either case I'll post it.

OK, I talked to the art teacher and he gave me a list of problems that we would face.
I thought maybe insignia material would work for a design of some sort. Here is sailrite site with their material. The price looks good, but only colors they advertize are red, black, blue, and white.http://secure.sailrite.com/AMAZING/items.asp?CartId={A386C298-4921-4C17-BA5A-6F5F0E0D5E6B}& Cc=153& Tp=

A long time ago, probably at least three years, someone on the Trailer Sailor BB did a painted logo on a genoa of the Chaquita (sp) bananna girl. However they did not disclose the secrets of how to do it. They instead took the commercial route of offering to do it for others. You might be able to find it in the archives. I remember the pictures of it flying were pretty spectacular.

There is a guy in Seattle who stenciled a PBY float plane on his C22 gennoa with a permenent marker. Had Kinkos blow up the line drawing and did it in his garage. You can find the picture on the natl association site. It turned out very nice.

Permanent marker has been in the lead for the project in my mind also. I had a friend many years ago in the Hobie racing days who had a cluster of red cherries with green leafs air brushed onto his white main sail. He was a cherry farmer in Stockton, CA. Looked very nice, but I have lost track of him. In a very competetive 'A' fleet his sail really set him apart from the rest of the fleet at the starts, seemed his was called over early more often then the rest of us. Napolian said "Never interrupt your enemy while he is making a mistake." My biggest concern with permanent markers is fading.

What about a silk Screen - would that work?

I frequently paint tee-shirts with sailboats, fish, islands, etc. I have a lovely Catalina 25 at anchor in a South Pacific lagoon on one of my shirts, on another I have a Potter 19 reaching for Santa Cruz island. I use permanent "Sharpie" markers to draw outlines and then paint with acrylic paints. These can be found in any art store. The acrylics stand up to machine washing quite well (better than the sharpie). You buy these in tubes (like artist oil paint), and mix with water to paint. The acrylic is water soluable when wet but waterproof when dry. So it's like painting with water colors and cleans up with water. Shirts last about 1 to 2 years (countless machine washes) before fading. I am still wearing some that are 10 years old.

These paints would be good for your project but I am not sure if the paint would penetrate sailcloth dacron. You need to try a little test on an old mainsail or something.

Excellent Jim, I will get to the local hobby shop and get a tube to sample. In fact, my wife does some craft work and might even have some already. Now to come up with a design.

Hey Ed,
Why don't you put that Banchee in the back of your 3/4 ton pickup and bring it to Lake Yosemite for our regatta this week end. It looks like we have a bunch of force 5's, and Catalina 22's signed up.

Matt, I wish I had known about that sooner. I already promised the 15 yr old that we would dust off the Hobie 16 and head out to Woodward Res. for a regatta there. She has a friend racing with his parents and she wants to kick his butt. I haven't been on the Hobie for 3 years let alone raced (10 years). I hope to just survive!!! The wind here has been blowing 15 to 20 all day. I think I will pray for a little lighter tomorrow. Have great regatta tomorrow.

Never used them myself, but craft shops (Michaels or Joanne Fabrics) sell fabric paints, made specifically for painting on fabric material. I think I'd consider these paints over basic acrylics for longer wear. Good luck.
