We are looking for new and creative ways to re-cover our old and ratty original plaid interior cushion covers for our dinette layout Cat 25 rather than shell out big bucks for factory replacements. The foam appears to be in ok condition.
It may sound simplistic, but we just took our cushions to a local upholstery shop and had them all recovered for $700. It was my wife's birthday present to me that year. (We generally do practical birthday presents, and what can be more practical than improving your boat.)
Even more simplistic :) - I went to a local Home Goods (home furnishings store) and bought a couple of 60 x 72 inch heavy cotton shower curtains. They're off white with blue stripes. Pretty yachty looking, actually. They're water, mold, and stain resistant. I slapped them over the cushions, cut off the excess and pinned them with safety pins to see how they'd look, intending to remove them, add grommets to the backs and lace them on. They look good - so I left well enough alone. If someone turns them over they'll see they're pinned. Otherwise, they're great. Next winter I'll hem them, install the grommets, and lace them on.
Cost - $24 plus safety pins. Appearance - whole new boat.
My wife made ours. BUT, she said she ain't doing that again. So guess what? I put a wet rag soaked with bleach solution on one--- aaaugh. That cover with laced gromet sounds like a good idea. I might just try that with some vinyl from the fabric store.

I covered our cushions with upholstry fabric remnants. (Actually, the V berth is the same color, but a slightly different pattern, but it's almost un-noticeable). Wish I had a digital camera. I did the grommet/lacing business and the interior looks dang good, if I say so myself. I think it cost less than 50 bucks. Some hours, of course, but it was kind of fun. The old vinyl is still down. They sell seat covers for cars, don't they? This is a similar principle.
I like the idea of lacing a fabric over the existing cushings. My wife is an Emelda Marcos of everything. She changes things ,not when they wear out, but seasonally, like I've got a boat, barn, car loaded with towels, blankets, pillows, you name it I've got it. I'm just waiting for her next change over of bath towels. They're tan, just what the doctor ordered and I'll give them the laced on treatment.
I'm a depression baby...I don't waste anything...got most everything I ever owned.
She's the oposite...if it's been around it's out. Some things still have the store labels on them.
What a team !
She's wearing me out trying to find usefull uses for all manner of things. I carry wood from the wood pile in a $200 Gucci leather pocket book that had spent a season with us.
I'm thinking of reporting her to the operator of the town's landfill...voodn't hoit!<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
