I acquired "Amazing Grace" one year ago and she had a bad case of boat pox. You know thousands of finger nail sized blisters. I sanded down the hull and let it sit on the trailer in the Texas sun for three months. I used the WEST system on the hull ( it was applied between 6:00am and 8:00 am before it got to hot.) After the perscribed number of coats ond two coats of bottom paint she went into the water. This weekend I felt the water was warm enough to swin so I squeeged off the winter slime and examined the bottom. NO BLISTERS OR POX !!! I sure hope that it stays this way. I sure do not want to experience the pleasure of doing the bottom again except for paint. I would recommend using the WEST System to anybody that had this problem.

Jim,

What kind of barrier coat did you use?

I just did the West System barrier coating yesterday. One coat of pure epoxy and two coats of epoxy with the barrier-coat additive, then a coat of bottom paint. The second coat of bottom paint goes on tonight.

Did you just sand the hull smooth, or did you grind out the blisters and putty them, or did you sand ALL the gelcoat away?

I used the West System barrier coat but I put on (if I remember right) 4 to 6 coats, one right after the other. I sure got tired of mixing epoxy and the coat powder. By the way if you drip it on the drive way it stays.

The previous owner said that the bottom had been epoxied before, so I sanded down to pretty much to fiberglass. If you have the pox instead of a few blisters, I would sand off the gelcoat and start from there. The sanding is really a pain, I used an orbital sander, dust mask and changed paper often. I also discovered that old bottom paint dust and grass do not mix. The grass is coming back good this spring.

Happy Sails
