Noted this week end that their is a "stopper" (forgive my highly untechnical language - don't know what else to call it) in the mast where the main sail feeds in which keeps the mainsail from coming out of the track when it is lowered.
It also has the unintended consequence of keeping the mainsail from fully reefing as the sail is stopped from going lower than that point.
Another person at the marina mentioned that they had seen someone acquire a different "stopper" which instead of blocking the entire track, simply covers up the wide spot where you would normally remove/install the sail. Then the sail can go fully down to the boom when reefing.
Anyone know anything more about this or where to get it?
I'm one of those skippers who bought the mast gates from Joe Martinek in JohnMason's link above. I didn't even know I needed them until I saw that thread. I have a tall rig and have always had a tough time keeping the main tight. Since I installed the mast gates life is good!
The mast gates he makes are fantastic, I'm sure you can make them yourself too but for his modest price of around $30, why waste time you could be on the water? Joe's work is excellent and he usually has them pre-made and in stock. You can have them in just a week or two!
