Whew....been a while since I've had time to visit with you guys! The new baby has been keeping is busy as well as all the other stuff that does not relate to sailing. Anyway.....I'm preparing to pull my boat out for a bottom job and had a question regarding the keel supports on my trailer. When I purchased the boat I replaced the boards that the keel rests on in preperation for the long haul out here to Nevada from Ohio. I think when I did that, I used boards the were too thick....as a result I've noticed that not all of the rollers on the trailer touch the hull and I had the infamous "Catalina Smile" after towing the boat out here to Las Vegas. (Since repaired) My question is this....how much of the boat should rest on the rollers and how much weight should be on the keel bunks? Could I leave the boards off the trailer while I have it out of the water to make bottom painting easier? I hope everyones sailing season is going well and I look forward to finding a few spare moments to keep up with the board!
I have an E-Z Loader trailer, so it's probably a bit different, but I set mine up so all the weight is on the keel and the rollers (don't have the bunk boards) just support the boat enough to keep it upright. The rollers are firm enough against the hull that I can't turn them easily.
When I barrier-coated and bottom painted, I put two 4x4s, with pieces of 2x6 and carpet for pads on top, at the back of the boat and one at the bow. Then I could drop the rollers and paint all the bottom but the three pad areas.
It helped that the trailer was in the backyard on the grass, so the bottom end of the stilts wouldn't slip. Wouldn't do it that way if it were on concrete. Probably find someone with proper boat stands/jacks I could borrow if that were the case.
