My boat came with a Johnson 9.9hp outboard motor, I think it's called a Sailmaster, or something like that. It is original to the boat, a 1987 Catalina, and I don't have the manual. Can anyone tell me what the fuel mixture should be? I'm thinking it's 50 to 1, but I'd like some confirmation if possible.
I have a 1996 Johnson 9.9 Sailmaster which I bought new, as a leftover, in 2000 and the owner's manual says 50 to one.
My previous outboard was a 1983 Evinrude 9.9 Yachtwin, which was exactly the same as the Johnson Sailmaster of the same model year.
I ran it, as recommended by OMC, on 50 to one and it never gave me a lick of trouble and I replaced it only because I figured that after 16 years it didn't owe me any money.
I believe that for a few years around 84-86 or so, OMC tried marketing some Sailmaster/Yachtwin models for which they recommended a 100 to one ratio, but there were problems and this recommendation was discontinued and they went back to calling for 50 to one mixtures for these models.
One of the reasons they gave for their engines ability to operate on 100 to one, was they claimed their machining tolerances were so good that they produced less friction and so, could be operated with cleaner fuel/oil mixtures.
Since your's is an '87, and is well worn in, a 50 to one ratio can't do any harm, nor will it foul your plugs.
I just ran my Johnson Sailmaster 8hp to Bimini and back with out a lick of trouble. Put new plugs and lower end lube in it was all. Always starts second or third pull. Always use 50:1. That's 16 oz. per 6 gallon tank. I keep an extra six gallon fuel can onboard. When the fuel tank runs low I transfer it from the extra can. Then when it is empty I mix up the gas and oil in it.
If anyone happens to have a copy of the manual, and they wouldn't mind loaning it to me to copy, I would return it within a day or so. Or I could send a check for you to run a copy off on the Xerox.
I have a 1982 Johnson Sailmaster (7.5 HP) that came with a C25 I just bought. The boat was always in fresh water as far as I know (lake Murray in South carolina). I replaced the motor with a new Nissan 8 HP and am willing to sell the Johnson if anyone is interested. Motor runs - I have it on a stand and can demo with a start-up. I'm asking $125 or best offer. E-mail me at "billob@bellsouth.net". I am located in Mount PLeasant SC (near Charleston). Bill O'Brien
