I recently purchased an Air X wind turbine for my 77 C25. Being on the North Channel most of the summer I realized that a good part of my cruising budget was going to marina fees. sometimes lingering an extra day in a beautiful anchorage was out of the question because of charging needs. The motor only produces 60 watts, the turbine 400. Managing power and anchoring out would save me a substantial amount. I now have the unit and an 8 ft. schedule 40 pipe to mount it with. I'm looking for advice on mounting. I have the electronics and charging layout well in hand but the mechanics of where and how to mount are still up in the air (ok I'd like to get the generator up in the air but it's not there yet. My stern is of the older type with the motor on the port side and a swim ladder on the stbd. I was thinking of putting a sleeve type pipe through the present port locker vent, aft of the port jib car track. This unit is supposed to be very quiet but I would like to hear from any of you who have successfully isolated vibration from your wind turbine.
Ok it's obvious that this topic isn't a hot one. still there have to be a few of you that have had some experience with wind generators. perhaps a general discussion can get going.
I believe somebody makes a turbin that can be hoisted with a halyard into the fore triangle and deployed while at anchor. Anyway you could rig yours that way? Maybe use the T-track on the front of the mast (assuming you have one)? At anchor you should be facing into the wind. Of course you'll want to be able to stop the blade if the wind increases too much so you can bring the rig down. Not sure how you do that.
