I have a Honda 6.6 gallon tank sitting on the platform in the locker. Sitting just below it (on the bottom) is a 3.5 gallon backup tank. All I have to do is switch the fuel line between them. Two tanks are easier to handle than one.
I just bought a 6.5 gallon from West Marine that fits nicely. I wish I'd thought to go to Boaters World for the extra gallon, but no big deal. I use the 3 gallon tank that came with my new engine as a "spare" that sits in the rear of my cockpit (by the scuppers). I'm too paranoid about fumes to put the spare down below where it can't be vented. So I essentially have 9 gallons which is probably good enough for 10 or 12 hours of motoring. I haven't measured how much time I have available (per gallon?) hmmm seems like a good idea so I know my limits. I have a Suzuki 9.9 4 stroke. (God I love electric start). I hit a piling one time trying to hand start an OLD evinrude 2 stroke.
