I am trying to move my compass, but if I do I will have a hole next to the hatch. Has anyone ever tried to add a window in a hole like that before? I was thinking about using a piece of plexi-glass and 1/4 round as trim to dress it up.
Use a White deck access port. You can get a clear plate and use it like a porthole or just cover it up with the white port. I used the clear port and also inseted a stained glass sceen in it. It should be in the archives here somewhere.
I bought a used lewmar opening number 1 port from a lady in our swap meet and intend to install on the port side cockpit bulkhead over the galley sink to cover my old instrument holes. I'm really looking forward to having the view and the vent. It only cost me $50.
One of the boats I used to race on, they plugged the hole with a nice peice of teak ( a little bigger than the hole, with the ends beveled out to make a lid) Then put a nice inclinometer on the teak peice so it looked like a mounting board.
Have you thought of just replacing the compass, in some instances it might be cheaper than trying to put in a portlight or some similar item.
Our original compass location became our depth sounder - we then installed a new compass on the Port side of the coaming.
