I have a '83 fixed keel and the keel bolts are rusted. Must have had water in bilge for long time. Someone told me he had same problem (in another type boat) and just drilled some holes thru keel in bilge and put in long lag bolts - said this was much cheaper than replacing keel bolts. Is this an acceptable fix for this ??

Hi, the same thread is lower on this page, and you can see a photo of the result there.

I had seriously corroded keel bolts. They were about the size of a number 2 pencil, rusted to a solid mass. This was the only flaw found during survey when I bought the boat.

I had 6 new 3/4 inch holes bored into the keel (with the boat in the water), threaded, and new 316 stainless bolts driven in about 6 inches, epoxied, and then stainless bolts and washers tightened down. The old rusted bolts were treated with oxalcylic acid, and then covered with tar.

I love the result - I have 12 keel bolts (since the old ones were still holding). The bilge is dry and I have no fears about the keel.

Total cost of the job was $900. You could do it yourself, but the man I employed had a special drill press and lots of experience in keel bolt repair.

Hi Bob,

Jim has the right answer. Drill and tap new holes. Then screw in threaded SS rod. SS washers and nuts complete the install.

Lag bolts are not an acceptable solution. The threads are too coarse for proper holding.

Okay Jim B, I've gotta ask. Is the boat name "Indicipline" taken from the King Crimson song of the same title? I ask because I just bought a 1980 C25 swinger and named her "Little Wing."

Bob,

New keel bolts are the best solution, but check out page T-27 of the May Catalina Maninsheet magazine for an alternative. The writer used coupling nuts on his Cat 30 to salvage what remained of good thread on his keel bolts.
