Hello all,

I need to get a new mainsheet system for my C25. Can anyone tell me what size blocks I need, what types of blocks, and what kind and length of rope? Does Catalina Direct sell a kit, and is it more expensive than buying the pieces separately?

Hi Ben,

Here's the link to the C25 Parts catalog in the Brochures section of this website. The picture shows the bottom block and the sheet. The description talks about the whole system.

The mainsheet should be 3/8" braid on braid (Sta-Set is a favorite). So blocks that will accomodate that size line will be needed. Ronstan series 40 or series 50 blocks will work nicely. Harken, Shaefer, and Garhauer also make good blocks of the appropriate size.

Interestingly, the picture in the parts catalog shows a 4:1 system with the single block with cam cleat also with a becket. If you do this, you'll need a double block shackled to the boom. The production during the first couple of years used the 4:1 system. This was later changed to the standard 3:1 mainsheet system as described in the written description.

BTW, 75 feet of 3/8" braided line is really more than you need for the mainsheet. The reason for this length is to help you raising and lowering your mast by using the boom as a gin-pole and lowering the mast forward over the bow pulpit.

I use a 4:1 purchase with a 7/16" line for my mainsheet. I like the larger line because it has a better "hand" and, to me, that makes it easier to sheet in. The length of line you will need depends on the purchase you select(3:1 or 4:1).

To figure out how much line you will need, measure from the end of the boom(when it is pushed all the way to one side) to the traveller. Multiply this measurement by the purchase(3 or 4), then add 6 to 8 feet for the tail.

As for the blocks, I use Schaefer fiddles(one with cam and becket) that I bought off eBay for less than half what I could get anywhere else.
