Hi! We are new to this forum and new owners of a C25. We need some advice with a problem we are facing. It was suggested by CD that we install a zinc on our swing keel. The problem is that the keel has to be drilled.Has anyone done this? We would welcome and appreciate any suggestions. Thank you! La Dolce Vita
The keel is cast iron and as materials go, is pretty easy to drill and tap.
You need an electric drill, a set of drill bits, and the appropriate size tap. Note that your final drill size will be slightly less than your tap size. The size you'll need for any given tap is specified in charts... which are available on the web.
Once you have your hole drilled, start the tap in the end. Keeping it true to the hole, use a tap wrench (or a crescent wrench etc) and get it started. Every turn or so, back it up a quarter turn to break the chips. Be careful not to bottom the tap in the hole.
Use a SS bolt and lanicote the threads to keep it from seizing.

First a few questions. Do you trailer ? How long do you leave the boat in the water ? Salt or fresh Water ? The topic of zinc's has always started good debates. Do you need one ? It depends on how you use the boat. If your only in and out and trailering No you dont need one. If your in for the season you might consider it. Ask yourself though. What is there on the boat for electrolosis to bother. Engine? should have its own zink on the cavitation plate. Through hulls most are teflon with plastic plumbing. Electrical system. Not much of a system and unless your running an inboard with prop shaft and cutlass bearing do you realy need it. No. I never put a zink on my fin keel with bronze through hulls. I was in the water all year (Salt) and in a marina using shore power. I had "0" electrolosis. So take into consideration your circumstances and go from there. If your a swinger and put in for the summer I would just go with a zinc that you can just hang over the side. One of those funny fish shapes or such. Clip to the swinger cable when needed. Thats my two cents worth.
