Hi! We are new to this forum and new owners of a C25. We need some advice with a problem we are facing. It was suggested by CD that we install a zinc on our swing keel. The problem is that the keel has to be drilled.Has anyone done this? We would welcome and appreciate any suggestions. Thank you! La Dolce Vita
dlucier: Thank You for the welcome and the informative link.We are moving up from a C22 into the C25 so I'm sure we'll have plenty of questions. After reading this forum I am definitley going to check the spreader bracket, standing rigging and the thru hull fittings. From what the previous owner told us the keel pin was changed approx 7 yrs ago but we wil also give that a look. Anything else you can suggest? Thanks again! La Dolce Vita
I put a pair of zincs on my swing keel. First, make sure you're putting the zinc(s) on a part of the keel that doesn't retract into the hull. Then, find an appropriate zinc. The ones I used were about 2 1/2 inches in diameter. Possibly overkill. Then find a tap that fits the screw that comes with the zinc. Then find a drill that goes with the tap. The tap should say what size drill to use. Buy a very hard drill bit, because you're going to drill into steel. Then use some cutting oil. It's really a piece of cake. Should take less than half an hour.
I had the boat yard put approx. 2 1/2 in. sized zincs on my keel in Aug. and when I had it hauled out in April to paint the bottom, the zincs were maybe a third gone. So I don't think that's overkill. I actually had them replaced with larger ones. It was gratifying to see the zincs doing their job. I would rather the zincs deteriorate than cast iron. I keep my boat in salt water all the time. From 1986 until March 2002 my boat was in fresh Oklahoma water. As far as technique, I let the boat yard do it. But last year I did provide them with "how-to" printed from somewhere on this site.
Thank you all for sharing your knowledge.I almost feel like I never had a boat before!! We are not familiar with this forum so please excuse us if we aren't up to speed with all of you. We still own our 1981 C-22 and don't expect to have possession of our 1984 C-25 (hull #???? SR/SK)until next week. While we are waiting for the transport we wanted to do some research on drilling the keel. Fortunately I found this website and I am learning quite alot.We hope to launch as soon as possible and look forward to a great season here on the south shore of L.I. Ed "La Dolce Vita"
