I've looked around this site and the web and I can't find what I want. I'm looking for a lazy jack set up that is ajustable with a single line. The line would be run to a the cabintop jammer. The diagram in the tech tips from NTH DEGREE would work if I could find a way to bring the line around to the other side of the boom. It would also give me a 2:1 ratio I think? I know a lot if you have setups that work and a picture or two would be great. I'm looking to make this up myself. The marina that we are in is almost all power boats none of the sailboats have lazy jacks. So far I haven't found another boat to look at. Thank you in Advance Albert 82 sr/fk #3260
Albert: I'm not sure what you mean by "adjustable with a single line." I suppose mine qualifies. I bought the Harken lazy jack kit. . . the smallest one. You could put the line on either side of the boom, but you need to avoid conflicts with the cheek blocks for the reefing lines.
I don't have pictures, but I'll try to describe how the line runs. It begins at an eyestrap on one side of the boom about a third of the way aft from the mast. It then runs up through the block suspended from the line hanging down from the mast. It then runs aft to a point about two thirds of the way aft on the boom, and through an eyestrap under the boom. From there it runs up and through the block dangling from the other side of the mast, then down through a cheek block attached to the boom, and forward through an eyestrap. I cleat the line on one of the mast cleats. When I want to retract the jacks to put the sailcover on, I loosen the line, pull the jacks forward and hook them over the big halyard cleats.
If you wanted to run the line through a block at the mast step, through organizers, and then aft to a jammer, that should be no problem. It's not an issue for me, because I only adjust the jacks when I'm putting the sail cover on or off.
I am also just about to install a lazy jack system (smallest Harken system) and am curious about how you avoided the conflict with the reefing line and the LJ line that runs near the aft end of the boom goes completely around the boom. Do you just keep this under the reefing line or is there some hardware that can keep these from getting caught up?
My reefing line runs on the starboard side of the boom, and the LJ on port. Yes, the reefing line, as it runs forward from the cheek block port aft runs over the LJ lines when it crosses them. I haven't had any problem.
Thanks Brooke. It didn't seem like there would be a problem since they run in opposite directions and the LJ line should remain fairly snug to the boom, but I hate finding out about some of those things the hard way.
