<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote> I know it's come up before, but I just got the bill so I thought I'd share:
State Farm is charging $175 to cover my 1980 C25.
Hull=$10,000 Liability+ $100,000 (I also have an umbrella policy) Medical payments to others=$1,000 Deductible= $250
Great prices for sure...so how come Boat U.S. charges me $308 ( after a no claim history)and a $500 deductable? I may have a slightly higher hull figure, $ 12000 I think. Can't help but think they have a memory problem with the claims I had 6 years ago. Val on Calista # 3936
Kansas companies track claims going back only three years. But Val, factors differ according to where we sail. Coastal waters vs. inland lakes, longer seasons vs. short and motor vehicle records are tied to these policies through computer databases.
It would be interesting to know how Catalina 25's are rated across the country.
We pay about two hundred a year. Our boat never leaves Kansas lakes. It is stored on a trailer during the Winter (also carries insurance for towing on public highways). It is also subject to different Marine laws etc. etc.
You might want to inquire about insuring your boat through your homeowners policy. This is sometimes allowed on boats under 26 feet LOA and less than twenty five horsepower.
Your insurance company is required to inform you exactly how your premium is calculated.
Just renewed my policy with State Farm, 1995 C 250 WB, upstate N.Y. $198.00, Hull $15,000, Liability $100,000, Medical $1,000 per person, Deductible $250----No Previous Claims---- "Bear" on C250 #089
My Boat US policy for a '78 SK and trailer is only $114 per year. I am on the Columbia River, but use it in the San Juan Islands and Canada. The coverage is good: to the Northern tip of Vancouver Island. Maybe because my hull value is only $8K/ 1K on trailer (neither of which would replace what I have). No claims in 25 years.
i just reported a claim with boatus. my drain plug on my outboard came out, lost oil in lower unit, motor froze up. repair estimate $1200 for new lower unit. boatus approved claim and i received a check for $247. seems they have a 85% depreciation clause (page 3, repairs for partial loss). time to look for better insurance.
I just got the bill for my truck and will get the bill for the boat insurance within the next 4 to 6 weeks. State Farm on all of our policies. I was told that in California, they could not put the boat on the homeowners policy, although I guess they can in other states. My homeowners insurance went up 20% last renewal, and the policy on the truck jumped 6.5%, despite the fact that the vehicle is a year older and we have not had a claim, accident, or ticket in at least 12 years. Isn't the car insurance premium supposed to decline at least a little each year as the car gets older? Anyway, the boat policy last year was $250, for $8000 covereage on the boat, $3000 on the trailer, and $1000 on the outboard. I am not looking forward to the renewal, I am going to increase the coverage limits substantially - $7500 for the trailer and $2500 for the outboard, which is what these items would cost if I had to replace them. I don't want to change companies either, because now that the boat is nearing 25 years old, many insurers won't take a trailerable sailboat that old, and they few that do require a full survey - which I would have to pay for at a cost of about $500 - and the premiums are outrageous.

Just got my renewal from Boat US. I have a "boat saver" policy & keep the boat in the water at a marina off the Chesapeake Bay. I believe the policy specifies certain areas (like the Great Lakes) where I won't have coverage. My premium is $190/year with no limiations on having the boat in the water all year (some policies specify the boat must be out for winter months).
