hello all i am mid-haul out.. been so busy i have not even gotten a chance too look at the forums!
I have been taken plenty of pics, but need time to organize them. Couple questions:
1. I asked about getting the keel sandblasted, but that is a bit out of budjet.. I got a grinder with a steel bit on it.. Anyone try this? I am giving it a shot tommorow.
2. when the keel is faired down, should i put a coat of epoxy, or should i just etch, rustlock and paint?
3, What's the name of the keel bolt holding paste (lock-tight??)I wanna make sure those puppies don't ever move
i am in the process or fixing my keel trunk... wish me luck!
A robust angle grinder (5" or bigger) with a handful of grinding disks will do an 'ok 'job on the keel. You'll probably want a wire wheel to finish off with too.
However, be prepared for hours and hours of really filthy labor to get a decent finish. I did about 1/3 of my Venture keel before giving up and paying $90 to have it sandblasted (nearly 10 years ago). Giving up on it was due more to the quantity of filth being deposited in my driveway as the labor itself. The V23 keel is lots smaller than the Catalina too...
Be sure to wear a good, properly fitted respirator and ear and eye protection. Disposable coveralls are a good idea as you will generate lots of crud.
If you're not going to sandblast, I think I'd go with a rust converter or special marine grade metal preparation compound, If you're down to real clean iron, metal prep, then epoxy.. it will take multiple coats though. I think I put 6 or 8 on my Venture keel.
"Loctite" is the brand name of a popular thread locking compound. It comes in several grades.. I think I'd get the lighter grade as you really don't have much vibration to deal with in that application and you might want to get them out someday.
Currently maintaining two holes in the water...'77 Venture 23 and new to the family, '78 Catalina 25
