Recently I queried Earl Landers on his experience using a new winch, but he was unable to provide a comparison. I ask those of you who may have replaced your old winch: did you experiece any marked reduction in the effort needed to lower/raise the keel, after replacing the old winch? My winch is the original from 1981 and is a beast to crank, of course I am getting older by the day (hour) and appreciate any thought that the task could be reduced ( as in WING) Thanks, ron srsk #2343 Orion 1981 SW FL

I have not replaced the keel winch on my own boat, but I recall reading some posts on this forum that claim the new winch is a big improvement, for whatever that's worth...Try doing a search for "keel winch replacement" and similar key word phrases and see what you can find amongst the posta from last year.

I replaced my keel winch during the offseason. My old winch was in such bad shape I don't know how it was orginally supposed to perform but it was a real dog by the time I replaced it.

My new winch is very easy to use, so much so my 5'2" 110lb wife raises and lowers the keel with no problem whenever we "beach" it.

Note: The replacement winch's mounting plate (from Catalina Direct) did not match up with all three bolt holes drilled into the top step. I was able to redrill one hole in the mounting plate and was forced to cut one bolt shorter to get enough clearance but it did remount O.K. after these modifications and performs beautifully!

Thanks for the help, guys, and I also reviewed some older posts. I think this will be on my to-do list, as thw wing seems to fly away as I view the exchequer. Regards, ron srsk Orion SW FL
