The brown truck just stopped by with a box of goodies from the folks at CD. Among the stuff is a new rubrail insert. Here's my question: Do I need to feed the rubrail into the alum. strip that holds it or do I put one edge in and then coax the other edge in with something like a rubber mallet? If anyone has advice on this job I'd really appreciate it.

I had to remove part of my rubrail while installing a new bow fitting. Mine was much older and probably much stiffer than your new rubrail. I used a heat gun, and heated up about a foot at a time, making it very flexible. I just squeezed it into place with my hands, and it worked out really well. Before the heat gun, I tried a mallet. The old rail material tended to crack and split. Good Luck!

you don't have to feed the vinyl in, Just leave the coil out in the sun for a few hours. Then slide the bottom edge into the slot and gently move around the boat tapping the upper edge into the slot with a rubber hammer. When it is warm the insert will flex a little. I found it surprisingly easy to put in the new piece. It helps to have another set of hands to assist in handling the vinyl.
Hey, Nate...since you're living in the heart (read: heat) of the desert you shouldn't need that heat gun mentioned above. I live nearby in Hemet, CA and I did mine in the heat of summer. I just wrapped the new rubrail around the boat and stuck the bottom edge in the cleaned (lots of dust gets in there) lower edge and squeezed the vinyl and then pressed it into the top edge. I remember that my fingers got tired so I just took a break, sometimes overnight and continued the next day....took me several days to complete but I wasn't in a big hurry. Hope to someday trailer mine to your lake and do some sailing--just not during the summer. The might like the Vegas heat but I don't.
