A few weeks ago I reported the untimely death of my Magellan 315 due to operator error (I left it in the bottom of a very wet sailing dingy). Well good news, I left the unit in my pick up for a week and with the summer heat in the cab the moisture was cooked out. Even after having zero heart beat for over a week and moisture beading inside the display, she fired right up when I jolted her with the 12 volt adapter. Even better, all of my way points are still there. I don't think I would have been as fortunate if it had been salt water. Thank you Magellan!!<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

A few years ago I had a somewhat similar experience with a walkie talkie (family radio). I was in my kayak and flipped over in brackish water. I figured the unit was a goner so what did I have to loose. I took it apart washed it thoughly with fresh water (camp hose) and put the parts on the dash board to dry. Two days Later I reassembled it and fired it up and is still working.

My teenage daughter has a bad habit of taking our cordless phone to secret places to talk to her friends. Once for two weeks the phone was missing and though we paged and paged it we could not find it anywhere. When I was out cutting grass and putting various things up on the little fort platform by our swingset, there was the phone. It had been out there through several rain storms key pad up. When I tipped it over water poured out. The phone has never worked again.

Radios and GPS units may survive our carelesness, but woe to the device that finds itself in the hands of my daughter.

John, I would offer to send my GPS to your daughter for a real test but I think that I have already dodged one bullet and will leave it at that. I bet you can't wait until she is old enough to drive.<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

Our 3 year old Everett has been granted many names by the elder, Casey -- 6. Mr. Little hands, aka Stop and Rob, aka Bulldozer has laid wast to my dads Nikon F3, the admrials job applications, you name it he has done it.
Our phone on the other hand was destroyed by Sneaker the cat. Seems she mistook it for the cat box. I don't want to go further than that except to tell you I am the one who found out the damage and I want to describe that even less.

With that out of the way here are some photos of Ed the destroyer of GPS's doing the damage.

This was a month and a half ago at Lake Yosemite, Merced, CA. Ed made it out for the clubs anual regatta.

The wind was around 15, few gusts a little higher. Ed missed the first race, sailed the second. After a lunch break he joined our boat with my other friend Ed Dietz. The water, as the name of the lake does come from the Sierra Nevada, particually Yosemite and is therefore snow melt and quite cold. Probably not as cold as some of you measure cold.

The secon day was a little stiffer

Hey Matt, Thanks for the photos. If I had known your were taking pictures I would have smiled. Also thanks for not taking pictures of me upside down, and yes the water is very cold.

Two Christmas' ago I wanted a webcam and got an Intel that also makes a stand alone digital camera. When I sailed to my brothers house on the river for our birthday party there was only three feet of water at the end of his dock. So I used a canoe he had as a dinghy and guess what. Wanting to take pictures of the party I had the camera in hand while boarding the canoe and I went into the drink. Two weeks later I decided to try it and not only did it work but still had the pictures in it. It's not a great camera but for $60....
