I'm adding shore power to my C25. My question is where should I cut the hole and mount the shore power socket on the outside of the boat?

I tried to find a picture for you, but couldn't.

So I'll try to describe it. My shore power connector is on the port side, on the outside vertical part of the cockpit coaming, on the face angled somewhat forward, above where the side deck drain is. There's the outside vertical where the "Catalina 25" plastic logo is and aft of that, the vertical face angles out at 45 degrees or so. That 45 angled part. About centered in that face.

Good thing I don't write for a living, I'd go hungry.

Doug - I installed my Marinco connector in the same place that John describes (and I couldn't describe it any better, either!). It puts the power into the big "warehouse" port side locker, and from thence you can run it anywhere in the boat very easily. I installed a GFCI outlet in the locker for the battery charger and then ran power into the cabin and installed 2 more outlets.

What kind of breaker panel are you guys using? My 89 came with a receptacle mounted inside the port coaming, but it is not wired up. I have looked at the Blue Sea Panels with a 30 amp cutoff and 3 15 amp circuits. I figure one circuit for the outlets, one for the charger, and one spare.
What do you think?

Frank,
That I can find a picture of - well, schematic anyway.
This is what my boat has.

Your description sounds good, as long as the charger doesn't need more than 15 amps.

John,
I'm not an electrical engineer, but from the looks of your schematic you just have a 30 amp main breaker and no other smaller breakers? so you just take off a 15 amp leg from this to power your receptacles? If so, will the main trip if one leg is shorted? Maybe I'm missing something.

My connector is in the same place John describes--I guess that's the factory version. But I can't see why you'd want it there sailing in salt water. Why not inside the port coaming compartment, where seas and weather aren't going to be trying to get at it? I think that's what I'd do--especially since we're in salt water.

My 30A inlet is also on the port coaming. I installed this inlet last year because it originally had a plastic 110V inlet that was totally inadequate and no where near waterproof. In it's place, I installed a Marinco 30A stainless steel inlet that they advertise as waterproof.

Sorry Frank, this is the schematic from the manual. Factory set-up. I was just happy I could find a picture of it.

No 15 amp leg, 'cause it's not a split set-up like a 220 volt line in a house. If it were two 15s then you might be able to join them together for 30, but the shore power comes to the boat as 30 amp (at most marinas). The outlets are GFCI's so they'll trip at the slightest variance (measured in milliamps, I believe).

If you want 15 at the outlet then run the black wire to a 15 amp breaker from the 30 amp main and then to the two outlets; the white wire would still run to the neutral bar just like the schematic shows. Should be able to put both outlets on one breaker.

For 3 15's run three separate black wires all from the same post on the 30 amp breaker to the three 15 amp breakers or one black wire to the first 15 and from the same post on the first 15 to the second 15 and same to third 15, daisy-chaining (either way, same effect)

I put mine in the starboard winch island, forward face, and used a plastic 30A twistlock fitting I already had, would urge the waterproof model if you are going to buy one, worth the difference. I retrofitted a 110 breaker box at the after end of the starboard shelf above the settee, has 30A inlet breaker and three 15A breakers, to charger, amd port and stbd circuits, with GFCI outlets at galley, under steps to stbd, and at fwd stbd bulkhead, I had an existing locker at aft end of stbd settee, so located the charger there by marinetexing and screwing a backing plate to the hull, and then screwing the charger to that. Some day if I learn to post pictures will send some Orion mods to the tech tips, Orion #2343 srsk SW FL

My 1982 came (to me last summer) with a shore power plug inside the port side compartment in the coaming, at the rear. I am not sure all boats came with this teack trimmed compartment.

The location, though a little tight for my hands, works well. I have the twist ring that is a little tight to turn in side there. None the less, the plug facing forward allows me to simply run the shore power chord forward along the port side coaming, to the plug at the dock. The plug on the boat is protected from the weather inside this compartment, and does not add another thing to scrape your ankles on when you move about the deck.
